The Tories have massively increased the tax burden on the the rich while the lowest income are paying less tax than ever. At this point many of us are leaving the UK because it just doesn't pay to work in the UK any more given how much the government will take and how high costs are here compared to other countries. My unpopular opinion is that part of the reason why growth has been so bad under the Tories is that taxes and regulation have crushed productivity. Labour would be smart to not exacerbate these problems since lacklustre growth is why we haven't been able to significantly increase tax revenues in recent years.

A huge majority in terms of seats, but very fragile in terms of vote share and number of votes cast. The majority was more than 170, but the vote share was only 33.7% on a very poor 59.9% turnout. In other words only one in five of eligible voters actually voted Labour. Until now no party has ever had a majority on such a small percentage of the vote. In terms of actual votes cast, this government received 500,000 fewer votes than the Corbyn led Labour party in 2019. They received fewer than 10 million votes. The first government this side of WW2 to do that. Labour's vote share on that very poor turnout only increased by 1.5%. Contrast that with Tony Blair's 8.8% increase on a 71.3% turnout in 1997. In my view, regardless of the huge parliamentary majority, Labour's mandate is very fragile and because the majority was so huge on such a small percentage of the vote, it raises serious questions about our voting system. Winter fuel payments taken away from pensioners on the whim of a party elected by just one in five eligible voters.

Naturally, C4 can't resist stating Labour's vote share since 2019 rose ... by a 'huge' 1.6%. but of course, being C4, also neglect to add that even so, actually Labour polled 500,000+ FEWER VOTES THAN IN 2019. The reason, of course being that with The Tories justly despised by many of their own voters who simply sat on their hands and voted for no one, AND with Labour inspiring zero confidence too, the turnout at this election was abysmally low!

If we assume that 3 or 4 parties, each with 20+ % of the vote, will be a regular thing in Britain, you desperately need some kind of reform. It's the number of seats that matters not vote share. It has always been this way under FPTP, which was introduced by the Conservatives in 1885. It is quite common for parties to govern with less than 40% of the vote. Of course, you probably didn't mind the system when the Tories were winning (which under FPTP, is most of the time). This time however the Tory vote was split by Reform and many Labour and Liberal voters switched allegiance to vote tactically, hence the lower numbers.

How do people propose to deal with this global climate crisis? The answer is nothing as it is already far, far too late to solve the problem. And reducing emissions in Britain means nothing if China and other developing countries do not do the same. The fact is civilization may not Survive by continued dependence on oil, but it may also not survive if it stopped using oil altogether, at least right away, and there are so many products made from oil that humans need for a modern society. Going back to a medieval or Stone Age society is simply not possible, given the number of people on the planet, now well over 8 billion. And other environmental problems, like extinction of species of wildlife, have lasted as long or almost as long as humans themselves. These problems simply cannot be solved quickly and will take decades at least, probably centuries to be fixed, and are probably now too big to be solved.

"reducing emissions in Britain means nothing if China and other developing countries do not do the same" - How often do you think you have to repeat this nonsense to brainwash all into "what we are doing isn't really that bad, so let's keep doing it!"? China does not only produce a lot of the stuff all people around the world consume, thereby contributing to the climate crisis those emissions the consumer countries do not emit because they outsourced the production to China BUT it also installs more renewable power plans every year than the rest of the world combined. Although they produce so much for the whole world and therefore consume a lot of energy, they produced 29.14% of their TOTAL energy from renewables. The UK on the other hand produced 41% of its electricty from renewables but only 6% of its TOTAL energy consumption. What exactly is wrong about that and why should the UK not strive to be at least as good as China since it seems to be obsessed with being "world beating" at everything else?

Of course Clacton, Basildon, and Yarmouth are in the south but compared to other southern towns and cities they have been largely forlorn, destitute as well as recipients of a number of immigrants which were not met with proportional attempts at integration.. then people like nige exploit the destitute and resentful for his own purposes.

No, he lost because his party: crashed the economy, wanted to introduce national service, broke THEIR OWN covid rules, deported refugees, profited of covid by giving contracts to themselves, betted that the government would do something just before doing it, and loades of other stuff. If anything we have gained some of our lost moral ground back.
