Introduction
The topic of diversity was brought to my attention by my professor at Parsons, The new school for fashion. This wasn’t the first time I thought of the topic, the conversation of who is a model in the fashion industry that I would look up to became a conversation between my friends. When I encountered that question, I couldn't think of one model who is Indian and famous and in the fashion Industry or runway. I chose this topic obviously because I’m majoring in fashion design and also I am within a minority, I believe all body types, skin color, sexual orientations and gender identity should be represented in the modeling and fashion industry.
I interviewed my college professor Mr. Broadway. He introduced me to the extended parts of the fashion industry such as the modeling industry and personalized plus size management. We brainstormed and thought about what is missing in the industry. We covered topics such as transgender men and women and how there are not much option for them the fashion world. There are website they do have clothing and accessories, but there are no physical stores dedicated for the trans. Community. Another discussion we had was women of religious or anyone, who want to be fashionable but also modest. Diversity in the modeling industry was a major focus of our interview. He told me how some ethnicity are not introduced to the world wide modeling industry. Women and men are everywhere on magazine covers to the digital billboards of NYC, there are a variety of models from different countries but are there groups of people the modeling industry avoided? While sitting with Broadway, I was surprised who all the different parts of the same industry works together for the different types of people, but our goal was to make this industry stronger and better. All the ideas we came up with were so interesting but the one that interested me the most was, Is there ethnic diversity in the modeling industry? There are fashion shows runways and different programs that we use models to express our ideas through. For example in one fashion show there are models of different ethnic background but are there ethnicity or group of people that haven't been chosen. Do those individuals have someone to look up to? In my life I have Indian people to look up to like Indian American public speaker, advocate for civil rights and humanitarian and miss America 2014 miss Nina Davuluri.
This project help open the fashion Industry and its importance to represent people of different ethnicity regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender Identity. After my research I have concluded that the fashion Industry is not diverse enough that that everyone is included, but since I been working on this project I saw great improvement in the modeling industry. The number of plus size models increased have been added to print media, Andreja became the first Transgender Model to Sign a Beauty Contract. The number models of color has increased of social media and many more are being found all over the world like. Even if there is a lack of diversity in the industry, I'm positive we are on a good start to achieving it.
