I have a rule. If the factory put a gasket there, then it's meant to have a proper gasket. I only use silicone where the factory states to use it or where only silicone would do the job. It's always a pleasure to watch your diagnosis and your resultant repair. I've just bought a little 125cc bike as I remembered what fun I had when I was younger. I go everywhere on it now!

I found out the hard way, that the paper gaskets are actually very important. When i re-geared the transfer case on my UAZ, i put a few of the covers back together, with just liquid-gasket. and that was enough to make the whole thing "Lock-up" Turned out the gaskets were part of the tolerance. so i got the right paper gaskets in there, and it worked like a charm :)

Interesting... it makes sense! but still... that is some tight tolerances! But right now its the best explanation I can find on my gearbox.. :)

I think my Duster may have a "dry" sounding release bearing but its not got any worse over 6 months or so - at 73 miles with no record of a replacement clutch my plan is to see how it develops and if needs be replace and whilst I am there replace the clutch and replace the gearbox oil as well - I like the car and intend to look after it

The Pickup I changed a release bearing on a while back had been sounding like that for many many years... and used a lot!... They can last for a long time... :) I like the Duster.... Drove the 4x4 in Iceland some years back...

bearings are interesting things, but my rule of thumb is if the bearing is making a noise its probably due to be replaced if its a sealed bearing, if not and its dry you might maybe get away with it, but worn down bearings can last for a long time with some luck, but ive seen stuff go pretty catastrophic and its never fun

I saw a lot of liquid gaskets in Niva, but there are not many who have problems, but workmanship is very important, but it would be healthier if there was a paper gasket.

It does look like someone bodged that gearbox together (but then, given the state the car was in when you got it, it's no surprise!), gaskets do provide a means of spacing things properly, such as head gaskets in the engine (the thickness of them can change the compression too), and a lack of can cause problems with there not being enough clearances resulting in premature and excessive wear...

I don't know if it helps at all, but that transmission looks basically identical to the fiat 124 one, and the corresponding fiat part is part number 4326423.. if you have nearby suppliers that would have such a thing.
@SeasideGarage

I got the part in the mail already... but thanks! I could have been lucky at the local old fiat dealer actually...

Hey come on! If you change the clutch plate and release bearing then you definitely have to the last part too. The 'fingers' are mostly rotten in or will show metal fatique soon. At Auto doc you have complete clutches for more less than all the stress andtrouble a broken clutch will give you.

Its not worn... But I agree... I would say the same to others.. but still... I am going to reuse the old.. its looking brand new. time will tell if its a bad decision... It took a couple of hours to remove the gear box... its not a big deal really.

a Lada gearbox? that reminded me a particularly weird West/East engine swap. A Samara engine an gearboc in a Citroên BX chassis and suspension. yay or nay?

I know money is tight for you but get a clutch kit and be done with it, changing just the driven plate is not ideal, doing half a clutch often means doing it again.
@SeasideGarage

The clever thing is to do that yes... but the clutch pressure plate looks like new ... :)
