This is an uncut assemblage of video clips after the peak haddock catches of 2012. Significant recruitment of haddock occurred in 2013, the year before this video, which was compiled on behalf of Chadfish for the Cefas Fisheries Science Partnership Project 44 to aid the Defra/MMO assessment of whether this gill net fishery has low bycatch, low environmental impact, low discards, and so qualify for favourable quota allocation under the new Article 17 provisions of the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
The nets were set for ca. three hours. The video starts when already hauling nets. Video clips cover 3.5 miles, (5.6km) discontinuous. At a haul rate of 1m per second, net length hauled would approximate 840m.
Count of fish over the 14.28 minutes of the video:
22 pout, 7, lesser spotted dogfish, 6 pollock, 2 ballan wrass, 2 red gurnard, 1 red mullet
No discards, no bycatch
In 2014 the large year class caught in 2012 has passed through the fishery, and the next significant recruitment, in 2013, if present in the location, is evidently too small to be caught in these large mesh gill nets. Hence, no discards of undersized haddock.
This video was funded as part of the broader Fishface pilot, evaluating video equipment and methods to better assess local fish abundance, fish quality and environmental impact for small scale fisheries.
