His family were killed when he wasn't there and had kept his grief bottled up, to become the healer and save her he must first heal himself by opening up and letting out his grief for the first time. Brilliantly written and acted scene. I love this movie and will never understand the criticism it gets. The music is legendary.

The whole movie the audience is expected to care about things we're told to care about. What do we really know about Cleveland? Not very much. We don't really see his grief, we're just told about it. There's no payoff when he does let his grief out because we're not given the opportunity to experience it with him. He just goes about his routine, and a couple of times they briefly mention his tragic past. It feels so shoehorned into the story because we barely (if at all) see how it affected him. Like yeah, he lives alone, and has a speech impediment, but was there anything else there to show the audience how much this tragedy changed him?

I low-key love the criticism Shyamalan gets. This movie is him at his most out-there and I love it. It's like he's daring you to roll your eyes and call it cheesy. If you do that then he wins, because he doesn't want those naysayers as fans anyways. His secret is authenticity and this scene was so real it's crazy.

This scene is why I watch this movie. To see him break and let his guilt go. How he says he misses his familie's faces and how they remind him of God. Brilliant writing and acting. This movie and Signs are two overlooked and yet powerful movies. Really my two favorites from M. Night. People seem to get lost because they don't like the backdrop he set this movie in. They say Sea nymphs? How stupid. But it's not at all about Sea Nymphs. Love it! Love Signs.

Here, here. Same with the Village. At first, I was diappointed, but upon watching it a second or even third time, I realised the inner message of innocence was so utterly beautiful that eveything else suddenly fell into place. Signs is a very good film and Lady in the Water is truly made so by Paul Giamatti's acting.

This right here, i feel, was meant to symbolize what is truly good about humanity, what Story was meant to awaken. Apart from our evils, we are also full of hope, we stand by one another, we fight together, we grieve great loss, we regret, we protect, we try again after we fail, we are persistent, we have powerful faith, we can heal with words and feelings, we want the world to be better (even if the means to get there are questionable), and we can love so entirely and purely that it can resurrect even the most broken of souls. And what Shamalan was also trying to say is that it is us forgetting these beautiful traits of ours that is leading to war and destruction. Never forget what we are, and that we humans can do so much for the world. All we have to do is try!

I went to see this with my dad, I adored The Village (despite not "getting it" at first; I went "okay but what if the monsters WERE real?!" lmao) and I enjoyed this a lot, I gelled with the vibe of the movie and barbs against movie critics and the lore. Then it was the day before Anzac Day in 2007 and I tried to commit suicide. Anzac Day, after my dad calling everyone he could to get help for me, my parents and I watched this movie and it all clicked. Because of that, this movie means the absolute fucking world. Being reassured you have purpose the day after you did something based on the belief you didn't...that's real movie magic. Thank you, Night.

I liked this film. I liked its taste of modern fairy tale, and I liked its honesty in spite of what I hold a presumptuous character by Shyamalan and the convenience of having an old crone educated in a specific story. I liked most of the roles that the characters had to take in the story. This scene is probably one of the best I've ever seen in my life. It's of course a matter of direction and music, but mainly thanks to Paul Giamatti's absurdly good acting. D.R.

For all the problems I have with this movie, this scene really is touching. It's a make-it or break-it scene, where with a lesser actor, it would not have packed anywhere near the emotional punch that it does with Giamatti. His delivery has so much raw emotion, you can really put yourself in this character's shoes. You can feel his pain, his anger, his devastation-over his family's death and not being there to protect them. Five stars to Giamatti. Wish the rest of the movie were this good...
