I have two of these machines, both are probably early production and were equipped with a cheap, noisy, motor. The motors didn't even have external access for the brushes. I have replaced both motors and the machines are much quieter and more pleasant to use. I have seen a later production of the Lady Kenmore Model 89 which was factory equipped with a motor with external brush access. It was quieter at low speeds.

I am pleased that you have such respect and admiration for machines such as this one. I watched another video and cringed as the person took a heating tool to the cam stack area and I watched the stitch chart shrink and melt. Literally my jaw dropped, because as you stated, these German machines were imported by Sears for only 3 years and are well made collectable machines...

Yes, I know (the date of mfg). On the nomenclature plate which states 516.891, there are 3 sideways digits 601. This means 1960 January was the date that this machine was made. This does not confirm the date RANGE that Gritzner may have made the 516.891 version. Further, the 516.890 version would typically have been may prior to 516.891, but that could be the same year (1960) or earlier. The sample nomenclature plate that I have seen for 516.890 did not have the date stamp. Not all Kenmore machines did.

@@AlexanderDyer I took it to a sewing machine store and theowner asked me if the motor was turning slowly and smoking. I said 'Yes', and he said 'don't worry, just run the motor at full speed for a while and it will be fine when it warms up'. He was right. Apparently it happens when motors sit around for a long time. Later I experienced the same thing with an electric fan. It didn't want to go very fast so I left it on and now it's humming.

Very cool machine, picked one up for free but too damaged to be saved (rain and mouse poop). I also have the Gritzner automatic version. If you look under the top cover to the right of the presser foot pressure adjustment you might find what I think is a date stamp in the cast iron. My Lady Kenmore was 48 and the Gritzner is 52. The Kenmore's motor was the same color as the body of the machine. The Gritzner has an Elte (German) motor. Larger more powerful and 7500 rpm's.

Assuming your setting are correct. It is not uncommon for these to get gunked up with inappropriate oils. 3 in 1 oil sets up like glue for instance. Get some plain old sewing machine oil, clean and lubricate your machine. once you get things moving again just keep moving them with liberal oiling. You will wipe it all down before sewing so you don't get oil on your projects.
