One of the things I look for is a helm that can be closed in (or not) depending on the weather. The helms that are totally open I wouldn't like, given the weather on the ocean can be so cold and windy at times, and especially when the flying fish are bouncing into the boat as you sail. The Wynns (cat) and SV Delos (mono) both have fairly closed in helms (which I love).

I agree. We really want a hard Bimini over the helm area so that we can install roll down Strataglass to protect us when it is inclement. Flying fish is also another good reason. One flew right in my open hatch on my transatlantic. Those fish are slimy and smelly. You don't want to take that in the face at night. ha ha
@TraneFrancks

The 40 does have a zip-in soft enclosure for the bimini. Disappointingly, the throttle housing rubs against the outside wall, which means that it really isn't likely to last a long time. I saw the 40 with its enclosed helm at the boat show here in Tokyo last month.

Hey, folks... Charlie here. I'm enjoying your in depth videos on all the latest cats. You may recall, I suggested you consider building; you replied... Not. For myself, I'm (planning) to build, and getting an idea as to how factory cats are laid out is really helpful in terms of gathering finishing ideas - colours, appliances, etc. So your videos are great. Something I haven't seen is an indoor helm; this is common on kit boats, but apparently unavailable on production cats. A second, indoor helm makes so much sense. It amazes me that production cats don't seem to offer it. You're entirely correct that a fatter hull will sail more slowly, but carry more load and offer more useful living space. The difference in speed (from what I've read) is quite surprising; a more slender hull will do 12 - 15 knots in weather that would sail a production cat at 8. Schionning claims 20+ knots cruising speed for his G-force designs. Still, your arguments regarding living space vs speed are sound. If you'll be living aboard your cat 24/7, comfort is probably more important than speed. And the G-force designs are heartstoppingly beautiful, but not really practical for livaboard cruising. Looking forward to your next video - Charlie
@Bowmans-Woods

Thanks for writing in Charles. Good luck with your build. Thinner cats will sail faster if empty and light. But pile in all your belongings, Scuba tanks, All other toys and full fuel and water tanks you would often have on a full-time liveaboard and the thin hulls will be sooo low in the water the Cat won't sail well at all because it is overloaded. Then the slower fatter hulled Cat and the thinner faster cat may actually sail at the same speed. But the fatter cat is designed to take the weight so is safer in high winds. If I had a cat just for my vacation time and didn't overload it with stuff to live full time, then a performance cat would make a lot more sense.

I think a good option for you guys would be to buy a leopard 50 4 cabin version and put it into chartering with the moring company and they will pay for most of your boat if you let them charter for like three years when you get to use it 8 to 10 weeks of that of those three years and then you can take it back from them and you’re on it for a lot less than it actually cost to buy a leper 50 more because both depreciate so quickly if you buy a old leopard 48 that used to be charted you can get one for a pretty good deal in nice condition

We aren't interested in having a used Charter boat. We have seen how beat up they get in a fairly short time. A 5-year-old charter boat will look more beat up than a 10 yr old single owner boat. Ya. If you notice every Lagoon we walked on at the Annapolis show had floor squeaks. Now I am sure you can probably lesson that noise by sticking felt sticky backed adhesive strips between your floor boards and the supports but that is probably something Lagoon should address at the factory.

Used is the plan. Now if some manufacturer wants to give us a sweet deal to take their cat around the world, I wouldn't argue with new. ha ha. I am sure if you are buying new you can add that as an option. The 50' Bluewater we cross the Atlantic had that option. It costs more and we find there is a good chance at some point it can get jammed and you can't get it to go in or out.
