At an international summit on Wednesday, President Lai Ching-te once again urged democracies around the world to unite against authoritarianism. The event was the Concordia Annual Summit, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In a prerecorded message, Lai reiterated that China had distorted UN Resolution 2758 to claim sovereignty over Taiwan. He stressed, however, that neither side of the strait was subordinate to the other.
President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday presided over his second promotion ceremony as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The ceremony, which used to be held twice a year, is now a monthly affair.

I ask of the two generals to take on this immense responsibility and build a modern military for our country, while ensuring that our combat capability improves day by day. In the future, let us all work together to safeguard the security of our country and our people.
Besides encouraging troops at home, Lai has also made his voice be heard internationally.

China often uses lawfare and distorts history to expand its power. I want to emphasize that democratic Taiwan and authoritarian China are not subordinate to each other. This is a fact with a long-established, global consensus.

China has distorted United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 in support of its “one China principle,” falsely claiming that Taiwan is part of the People’s Republic of China and that we have no right to participate in the UN system and other international fora. China doesn’t just want to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. It intends to change the rules-based international order and achieve international hegemony.
Lai urged democracies around the world to band together and counter authoritarianism to start a new chapter for the democratic development of the world.
