Lake Junaluska is a beautiful 200 acre lake nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains and is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Area. This beautiful lake , which is 30 minutes from downtown Asheville, is surrounded by private residences and the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center.
Lake Junaluska is named after a close by mountain - Mount Junaluska. The Mountain was named after a Cherokee leader - Chief Junaluska. Chief Junaluska was the leader of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and fought beside a future president- Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. He saved Andrew Jackson's life in this battle.
Lake Junaluska is fed by Richland Creek which is a tributary to the Pigeon River. It was on June 25 of 1913 , that the second General Missionary Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church convened in a new auditorium & beside a lake yet to filled after Richland Creek had been dam up. At that time there was only 13 houses and no hotel - so many of the guest had to find another location to spend the night. Today - Lake Junaluska has more than 2,700 residents. Some of the popular hotels would soon be built like the Lambuth Inn ( built in 1921). There was a large lighted cross built nearby overlooking the lake . Since then - 1994 - a new cross was placed and the orginal cross was restored and is located at the Mount Shepherd Retreat Center in Asheboro , NC.
