When my siblings and I were growing up (I am 68 so that’s how long ago it was) our parents took us to Lake Mead every summer for years, joining their friends on the water as everyone had boats. We would find a good spot to call home and camped out for a week. Worst sunburn I got was at this lake. We visited the dam one time and that was when I first felt a fear of heights. Our parents are gone now but we have wonderful memories of of this great place. It is a huge part of our childhood. It’s story now breaks my heart.

Wow, that's quite a story of a disappearing landmark. You've been there since 2002 , you say. Is there any solution here, besides short-term things, like cutting out agriculture draws & maybe forcing less water use. It seem the overwhelming cause of this cannot be stopped, except by a reversal of the long term drought that's been happening. That "dead pool" scenario, when do you see that happening? Thanks for the video. I live in upper Michigan on Superior & our only water "problem" is excess water at times. I did visit your area several times in 80s & 90s, & what is happening is startling.

I totally agree with your comment. In recent times, I too have been worried about the issue of water shortage there and throughout the West Coast. One idea or solution I thought of was; "How did Israel handle their water problem?" They solved the water issue. They manage to plant green gardens and vegetation in the desert as well as supply water to the population . Not only did they supply water for their country but also came into agreement with a few of their neighboring countries. Recently, about a month ago, I read a news article in which the Mayor of a region in southern Arizona visited Israel to learn what and how they solved their water issues. Then, he invited the Israelie engineers to come to Arizona and study the problem there. What resulted was the Israelie government and their engineers will help bring processed clean water to Southern Arizona via Mexico from the Baja water region. A Desalination plant will be built there in a small town in Mexico. In return, Arizona and that Mexican region gpvernment have made a deal to use the land to proces and pump the water to Arizona. Based on Israel's history with solving their water problems, "Why can't California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada work together in a joint effort to solve t Americahe water problem now!" Israel knew back in 1947 what the challenge would be to feed their country clean drinking water as well as farming water. It took years to perfect it and they did it! All I can say is "America wakeup and start moving on it!" Mahalo (Thank you)

@@hawaii50cowboy sorry my friend, but desalination creates problems itself. First, our ocean does more for the air we breath than forest, etc. It takes 3 gal to make 1 gal of drinking water; highly inefficient. What to do w/the waste? Put it back in the ocean? Look at countries doing this: coasts are high in sodium & it effects plant & animal life. So we should ruin the ocean so ppl can live where there is no water? Square peg, diamond hole.

I retired in 2017 from UMC hospital in Las Vegas. I knew full well the lake was slowly evaporating daily. The City for a number of years had been pushing Water conservation strategies including rewards for desert landscaping versus grass lawns. I also knew eventually life was going to be rough for many living there. Not to mention California, Arizona, and New Mexico, who depends on the Lake Mead water for farming, and Electricity. It's only a matter of time how life will be affected by the water shortage I am a Native Hawaiian and I moved back home after retiring. I think about how lucky we are in Hawaii regarding forest fires and how easy it is for the Fire company helicopters to scoop up ocean water to put the fires out. I have a heart for the many lives affected by the drought and yearly forest fires throughout the West coast regions. I tip my hat and say thank you for the video presentation it further opened my eyes to the seriousness of the water problem there. Mahalo! (Thank you)

That speed boat sticking straight up is a good lesson in science. It probably has a pair of big block Chevys and outdrives attached to it that were heavier than the air left in the bow of the boat when it sank. The air kept the nose pointing straight up as it hit the bottom when it sank and gravity pulled the boat into the super soft silty mud. There you go. This is excellent! what a tremendous vantage point, seeing the lake from the air...it truly is head-shaking, these low levels. I live in Phoenix, and we get much of our water from the CAP, the Central Arizona Project. This series of canals brings us water (compliments of the dams) from the Colorado river....which originates in Colorado, in the Rockies > where winters have certainly diminished, over time. I've been looking to buy a home and while I love Arizona, the water issue is foremost in my mind: do I move north, given this drought situation? I may become a "modern day Anasazi", the ancient American Indians who, altho with a thriving culture, disappeared, the theory is, due to drought. In my view, we need to never forget that the Southwest, including SoCal, is a desert. 'Nuff said.

So sad the way it looks now compared to when my family use to go camping I the 1960. I will be 70 years old in September. Thank you for the opportunity to see the lake levels.

I was so fortunate to go to Las Vegas from Texas in support of Red Flag several times in the 1980's. No one wanted to go, especially the married guys and some did not want to go because they lost so much money. I would always gladly take their turn. Twice I was able to drive from Texas to Las Vegas and go across Hoover Dam (no bridge then of course) and what a thrill for this country boy from WV. I was there when the MGM caught fire and also when Russia invaded Afganistan. Just so many memories of Vegas, the shows and the food/Buffets. I have never been in a helicopter and your video was like I was there with you. Retired AF now and in my early 70's and I just want to say Thank You for the Tour! I pray that God will fix this serious CRISIS. subscribed

Thanks for the ride. I went for ground school for Rotory Wing back in the 90s when I worked at Sikorsky's. We were trained to do a the right hand approach but never could afford to fly to get all the hours in for commercial. I visited Vagas 7 years ago and was at Hover Dam. Wow is the lake bad! I hate to but I'm paying for bad weather so it fills back up for you.

Many years ago I got to see the water go over the spill way. I wish I had a video camera back then to film it but I would of never thought that 38 years later it would come to this. Glad I changed my mind about relocating to Boulder city. Love your videos..keep them coming with the mead fly overs.

Stunning aerial photography and narration and yet so sad to see our necessity, water, disappearing where we most need it. If it's not replentished Las Vegas' days and a lot of other areas of the southwest appear to be numbered, for sure. Thank you for sharing this!
