ZDDP, or commonly just referred to as zinc in motor oil, is a misunderstood topic and the cause of heated debates in internet forums. Even we didn't fully understand it, and it's difficult to cut through rhetoric from armchair engineers and advertising to get real information in plain English. Do you really need it for flat tappet camshafts? How much is too much? What about additives versus a purpose blended oil? All of these are questions being asked over more than a decade by classic car enthusiasts.
So what did we do? We organized an interview with a lubrication expert who understands our cars, their specific needs, and--importantly--the chemistry behind the oil we pour into the crankcase! This is part 1 of our conversation with Lake Speed Jr., son of NASCAR driver Lake Speed (yes, that name is real) and a certified lubrication specialist. He touches on ZDDP, it's history, who makes it, and how it fits into classic car engines. We'll also dive into some other topics, such as manual gearbox oils, differentials, and even fuel additives. It's a fascinating dive into the science behind what your car needs! Enjoy!
