Lake Wissota and its hydroelectric dam turned 100 in 2017. The dam is located two miles northeast of Chippewa Falls at the confluence of the Chippewa and Yellow Rivers and Paint Creek.
The Wisconsin-Minnesota Light & Power Company constructed the dam to provide electricity to their northwestern Wisconsin territory and St. Paul. Construction took 18 months to complete, employed over 1,000 workers, and cost almost $6 million. The project used over 110,000 barrels of cement, 2,700 tons of steel, and 250,000 feet of lumber.
The Chippewa Valley Museum holds over 500 historic photos documenting the construction project in its Glenn Curtis Smoot Library and Archives. www.cvmuseum.com
