I use UVR. Ultimate vocal remover. It's a very good stem separator and it's totally free and runs on your computer. Only disadvantage is that it's quite slow if you don't have a GPU, but it works better than most other stem separators.

The vocals i also prefer them dry. So a point for Lalal on this one too!

You can turn destructive and non-destructive on or off in SL. Would have been more accurate to have compared SL destructive with LaLa AI destructive. Destructive in SL gives much 'cleaner' results per stem than it does in non-destructive mode. 🧡

There is destructive in SL?! Had no idea about it, seriously :O Where do I set it up?

@@FoliaSound From the manual. Important bit in bold. Unmixing Layers Layer › Unmix Stems… Automatically unmix the active layer into instrument stems, using artificial intelligence. By default the layer will be unmixed into Vocals, Piano, Drums, Bass and Other layers. When you uncheck one of those, potential matches will be transferred to Other. Each instrument has a Sensitivity parameter to adjust how the artificial intelligence perform the separation. The end result is a Non-destructive unmix *if that option is checked. If it is unchecked, the sensitivity parameter affect each instrument without rebalancing the others to compensate*

The non-destructive mode existed in SL9 but we are in version 11 and there is no choice for non-destructive mode and no sliders. It was removed already in version 10.

@@andreasmuller8937 Really? How ridiculous of Stenberg to do so. I'm on 9 and really don't use it enough to pay for upgrading. Sorry Paul! 😒

I'm actually surprised that spectral beat LALAL in any category. Due to that I would say that both are useful in their own way. I feel that lalal know their product is the best overall though and that is the reason they feel confident in their business model going with a time based credit payment structure/SAS model. I have to say though I feel LALAL deserves an extra point because if your DAW doesn't have ARA2 it doesn't matter whether or not Spectral is a plugin.

Hey Paul, I'm curious what your thoughts are about RipX? I know it does a better job than izotope but curious how it would hold up against Spectralayers. It keeps surprising me with the results especially on vocals and drums. Great video again 🙏

To me this proves it’s worth buying/using both. Like that guitar one in the second track was crap from lalal, but clearly had others that were better as well. Lalal also has more limited capabilities compared with SpectraLayers, so ..

I would like something that can just recognise different elements without identifying them because I have some old experimental material that I would like to remix. If your stuff has lots of sound design is there anything out there that can separate the sounds?

Don't you think that stem separation is something else than generative music? Don't you think, that AI can be used for good and bad, as anything else? My criticism wasn't towards all audio AI, because AI denoising and stem separation are actually crazy and I use them a lot. My criticism was all about generative AI music and the way Suno and Udio make and sell it. I'm sorry if that didn't go through in your reception, but I don't feel responsible for that, too :)
