In this video my life-long best friend Don shows me his method of doing a "hardwood ceiling on a budget". What's his solution? He uses laminate flooring instead of ceiling tiles!
The assembly process is the same as putting laminate flooring on a floor except that we use a pneumatic nail gun loaded with (what I believe are) 1/2" brads to secure the planks to the ceiling. Anyone familiar with these types of floors will be quick to point out that this kind of flooring is also referred to as a "floating floor"- so named because it does NOT get nailed down. That's to allow for expansion and contraction due to heat and humidity. While I don't really have a concrete answer about why that hasn't been a problem for Don, I can say definitively that this is the second ceiling he's done this way. The other was done three years ago in a basement room of the same house and so far he's had no issues.
