Great video, thought I had a socket that failed; turned out the LED bulb base was preventing it from making a connection completely within the socket.

Perfect; pulling up on the tang worked. Now the bulb I threw away probably was still good. THANKS

Very helpful viideo - useful information, clearly explained. The cutaway socket you used to illustrate your points make it much easier to understand what you were talking about.

Simplistic answers like this one do nothing to cure problems that have been created over time using incandescent lamps. The heat generated by incandescant lamps causes the screw shell ant the rivets to expand and contract. The 2 metals have different co-efficients of expansion, and eventually have enough thermal damage to prevent that socket from carrying enough electricity to light the lamp.

Great video. I have a problem with a pool light socket. It's getting power to the socket but I can't get a bulb to come on and work. I've tried several. I took a screwdriver and raised up the little tab in the middle to make sure that it was making contact with the bulb end. It's getting contact. The housing is very expensive and difficult to change. It does have screws in the socket. Wondering if I should pull those out and see what's behind it

The screws may be holding the socket to a bracket. If you see rivets, they are likely connecting the wires to the socket and center tang. You may see scorching around the rivets indicating high resistance. If that is the case, you may have to resort to the solution of small screws and nuts through the rivets to restore the connection.

@sparkyjohnrg thanks for your response and information. If I unscrew those screws should that whole socket come out? Have you ever seen a socket get 120 volts and still not able to turn on a light bulb? By the way are the rivets you talking about underneath the socket?

@@eddees8089 The screws will detach the socket from the bracket. Depending on which bracket, it may only slightly create slack. Rivets, if used, would be visible at the bottom of the screw shell. If the rivets are used, and are the problem, you may see charring around the rivet. As the socket heats up and cools down, this stresses the rivet, loosens the rivet, and creates resistance and heat, and thus chars the shell at the rivet.

Sparky John i have a three fixture bathroom light (five years old). When a bulb burns out it is always the fixture on the far right of the three. What do you think would make bulbs in that one fixture blow each time? Thanks Bud!!!

Have you tried 130 Volt rated bulbs? Have you tried compact fluorescents, or L.E.D.'s? All of those I just listed should be less sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

But you didn't tell us if the screw shell can be replaced by itself, or if the entire socket has to be replaced. Mine came out of my MOBILITE Chrome Cone Model 317-1 Black Bed Lamp from 1982 , and the access is ridiculously difficult for a comparatively simple fix.

I am not replacing the socket, merely removing the rivets and replacing them with a screw & nut. I have seen a very small screw & nut put through the rivet.

Bending out the tang didn't help. Even pulling it out far. Still flickers when touched, and eventually goes off. - He talks about other points of failure, but doesn't provide a quick fix for that. Fail.

Did you look at the Rivets that hold the shell to the White wire? Is there Charring, or corrosion? That would indicate a poor or intermittent connection.
