Chris, with all due respect, and because I'm an engineer too, I hope you're not getting the paralysis of analysis to make this a better design. I know you've seen it before but we, as engineers, can sometimes get so wrapped up in design improvements that the build never gets done.

Completely agree. That said many improvements I am planning are already done. Chris Zavatson has better brakes, a cowling and Carbon fiber gear doors for the outback gear. Hakan Langebro has a beluga-style fuselage mod for improving handling caused by aerodynamic issues with the area aft of the fuselage. Wing tip tanks are available also. These are off the shelf mods, not things I am designing. The seats are for me... that's what I want! Really REALLY comfy seats. I had a car wreck and have 2 herniated disc's in my lower back.... I'm not flying a tractor seat! I'd be happy to do an entire video talking to you about design scope creep . It's true we can get mired down in it but... in my case I can't start building till I move into my hangar next month so in the meantime.... seats and firewall forward planning.

Wow, very cool seats for sure. My 360 is almost finished. Wish I had your seats to install in my airplane. I only have room for some thin foam seat cushions in my airplane. I would build the airplane first and think about seats last. They do look nice on your computer.

Just a thought to consider. I fly a Skystar Pulsar III which is very much like a fixed gear 360. I fly XC and one thing I’ve found important is having the ability to reach over the seat back to retrieve something from the cargo area- the backup iPad, a USB battery or the handheld radio. Snacks and other comfort items as well. I have resisted the desire to have cool looking head rests for this reason.

Great comment. Fortunately, the seats tilt forward like a car.

Hello Chris, well done and nice fuselage/seats rendering. This is going to be a nice airplane. In your seat planning you haven't mentioned baggage compartment access, which is a big thing on the 360. I'm assuming you've already thought of that but just in case, unless you're planning on a left side "outside opening window" access mod, those seats don't look like they'll allow for easy baggage access. Will you wear a parachute and/or helmet? If so, you'll need space for that. Don't forget, you'll also need access to that space for your routine inspection/maintenance of the hydraulic pump, tail flight control cables and nav equipments which are all located behind those seats. In any case, thanks for sharing your ideas!

The seats tilt forward like a car. The rear window mod is also being done so it is removable and can open to allow access.

Something else to think about. If you plan to have internal antennas, all that carbon fiber will very likely create a dead zone.

Hi Chris, looking forward to following the construction of your Lancair. You are living my retirement dream of building/buying a Lancair 320/360.

Thin seats can work as well. Check with Oregon Aero, they are a good source for seat design and materials. Layered foam of different density can work for a seat with a thickness of about 2 1/2". Copy dimensions and angles from GM automotive seats, Buick has some very good design seats that are comfortable over long periods. Create full size foam core mock-ups of your design with the actual foam layers to see if it works sitting for 2 or 3 hours at a time. Allow for some movement for your lower back that might improve your overall comfort level.

Minimize bolsters. Mine are too much in my Legacy as we were modeling on a sports car also. Focus on room. Zero need for lateral restraint from bolsters.

When I was building an ES, I looked into adapting car racing seats. I realized though that they're built w a lot of bolster to cope w the side forces cars experience on turns. Airplanes, however, don't experience the same lateral forces and so I assumed that most of the bolster, which was making it hard to fit two seats side-by-side, was unnecessary. What do you think?

I will be reducing the side bolsters to maybe 1/3 or so. Just enough to feel comfy and more importantly a working lumbar bladder with a pump.

You don’t need a headrest in an airplane. You never touch it with your head and you never experience a crash from the rear. It’s just WEIGHT!😂

Nice… but they will never fit. You need about 4 inches between the seats for the center tunnel which contains the elevator push rod, fuel lines, brake lines, miscellaneous cables and wires. Plus with those high seat headrests you won’t have access to the rear baggage compartment.
