When Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot Société Anonyme merged to form Stellantis, the company pledged to preserve all brands in its vast lineup. This promise includes the historic Lancia marque, which is making a notable comeback with the launch of the 2024 Ypsilon. This fourth-generation model marks the return of the High-Fidelity badge, with the new Ypsilon HF taking center stage alongside a rally derivative.
Breaking from tradition, the new Ypsilon HF is purely electric, a first for the HF badge. It delivers 237 horsepower from a front-mounted motor, matching the performance of the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce. This is not a coincidence, as all three models share the Common Modular Platform used by various Stellantis vehicles, including the Jeep Avenger, which is not sold in the United States.
The Ypsilon HF’s electric motor is powered by a 54-kilowatt-hour battery pack, also used in the Alfa Romeo and Abarth models. Lancia claims it can accelerate from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in 5.8 seconds, an impressive feat for a small front-wheel-drive hatchback. The Ypsilon HF also boasts a wider track and lowered suspension to enhance its handling capabilities.
Although today’s debut serves as a preview, the high-performance supermini will not be available for purchase in Europe until May 2025. Lancia has announced that all future models will receive the High-Fidelity treatment, with the Gamma and Delta set to make a comeback later in the decade.
The iconic little elephant logo, first used in 1960, represents a club for owners with at least six cars. The HF Lancia Racing Team, established in 1963, saw its first car adorned with the logo in 1966-the Fulvia Coupe HF. Legendary rally cars such as the Stratos HF and Delta HF Integrale Evolution proudly bore the elephant during Lancia’s heyday. It is said that Gianni Lancia, son of founder Vincenzo Lancia and CEO from 1949 to 1955, chose the logo as a lucky charm as early as 1953.
In addition to the road-going Ypsilon HF, Lancia is introducing the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF. This motorsport version features a turbocharged gasoline engine, a three-cylinder, 1.2-liter unit producing 209 horsepower. Designed to meet Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile's Group Rally4 regulations, this rally car marks Lancia’s return to the racing scene after a lengthy hiatus.
The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF, also front-wheel drive, includes a five-speed gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Its appearance closely mirrors the street-legal Ypsilon HF due to regulations requiring it to be largely based on a production vehicle. Group Rally4, established in 2019, evolved from the R2 class of Group R cars, providing a framework for this exciting new rally competitor.
