I dont know much about drains, but having the same problem in my garden I researched land drainage and what I do know is this: 1. The drain should be wrapped in membrane to prevent fine particles of soil blocking the drainage holes. 2. Gravel should be under and on top if the pipe. 3. Y junctions should be used in the connections. 4. The fall shoild be 1:150 how was this checked? 5. Consent from the local council should been obtained, (usually not allowed!) before draining into the main system. 6. If draining into the main system, standard pipe couplings or flexible rubber adaptors used. 7. If draining into a soakaway plastic crates should be used. Think there's a number of issues here!

If the land drain is still working fine six years later that's fine, many of the comments here seem to be from people who consider there are two ways of doing a job, the wrong way and my way. As far as fancy workwear is concerned being self employed you have complete freedom of choice, sandals is a lot better than bare feet. Although I would recommend always using eye and ear protection when appropriate.

Hi Eric, now im not a landscaper by any measure , but was curious as to your underground connection to the clay pipe , I have connected into these on many occasion and have always cut a section out of the clay pipe out and installed band seals and then either a 100mm underground directional T inline with the water flow , regarding people commenting on the soak away , they are the preferred method , but where the only choice is to run it into the foul drainage , most authorities do allow it , but tend to insist that where possible it enters the drain at invert level if going directly into the manhole

Was it actually legal under the Water Industry Act 1991 and the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 for the householders to just break into a public sewer to drain their garden groundwater - doesn't permission have to be obtained before commencing works? Plus, the waste water company can charge to take ground water away. Also, in what way were those methods of pipe connection compliant to water industry standards?

I know nothing about drains and pipes but that definitely does not look right to me!! Expanding foam is not waterproof, he’s used it to seal the joints on the pipe and cover the holes!! Water will leak though within weeks! The thing is as the water will leak underground, owner won’t notice for a long time but eventually the ground will go soft and that area will sink over time, (couple years). So you will get a new puddle on the ground above the drain and these guys can he hired again!!

You are allowed to use a combined system with the permission of your local authority. A soak away will only work if the ground is permeable. If there is cause for land drainage in the first place then it is unlikely that a soakaway will work in this sub soil.
