In December 2020, the crankshaft on our Land Discovery 4 SDV6 broke as we were driving along the motorway. It was only 5 years old (10/2015 model) with just 90k km / 55k miles on the clock and a full LR service history.
A glance around used car listings reveals plenty of Land Rovers and Range Rovers with the same failure / engine replacements at just 1-5 years of age and as little as 10k km.
Before buying, I had done some research and read something about early models suffering engine failures but wrongly assumed that any serious faults would have been corrected over the years! Variations of this 2.7L and 3L TDV6/SDV6 engines have been used since 2006 on all the Jaguar Land Rover range. Discoverys and Range Rovers seem to be most liable to crankshaft failure, perhaps due to their extra weight. It's a Ford PSA engine and this inherent fault is widely reported. Recalls were apparently issued in some markets such as South Korea or China (e.g. www.spglobal.com/marketintell...) but never in Europe. LR Service Bulletins have been published in the UK but nothing more.
It is surprising as not only is it a question of reasonable expected lifetime of the product but also a safety concern!
There doesn't seem to be any real conclusion as to why this happens so frequently on these engines. However, there is some useful insight on Piston Broke Garage's video ( • Video ) and especially in the comments section where there seems to be some consensus that it is probably a combination of a) a weak crankshaft and b) a series of other factors including a poorly performing harmonic balancer and oil issues.
In light of this, one would think that JLR might offer their loyal customers more than a 20% contribution towards the hefty bill (approximately 19,000 euro inc. VAT for a new engine).
More detailed footage on the crankshaft failure can be found on Piston Broke's channel ( • Video ) and this excellent video by LR Time ( • Is this the end? Compl... ), or QP Online (qponline) on Facebook/Instagram.
It's a real shame as the Discovery 4 is otherwise a great car - some more support from Jaguar Land Rover for this problem would go a long way to saving their reputation.
