An easier, and quicker way for adjusting the valves is to adjust them at the TDC power stroke. Then you can adjust both inlet and exhaust at the same time. Just remove the spark plugs and put a screwdriver in, to feel the piston is at TDC. Works like a dream. :)

Joel - great work - looking forward to seeing how she sounds. Thank you for the shout outs!!! A couple of comments/thoughts: - It’s recommended to warm the engine up, then set the valves - although I don’t think it makes a huge difference. Some similar vehicles specify engine cold when setting the valves. Not sure if the Haynes Manual recommends cold. - Great call to torque the engine bolts “while the patient was open” - Regarding the crank handle - mine was missing too when I bought my truck. Some patient searching on the internet provided one. I did have the interior cab mounting brackets in-place to hold the crank when not in use - they’re the clips on the floor behind the seats - accessible when tilting the seats forward. Not sure if your clips were still there. Starting the truck with the crank handle is a fun “party trick”. I’ll take a picture of where mine is mounted and email you. - Regarding the blanked-off tubes off of the oil fill and carb. That is an emissions part and it’s also meant to allow crank case pressure and oily fumes to be reintroduced into the engine via the carb’s air intake - to be burned off and exited via the exhaust. With that sealed off, you can build up pressure in the lower crank case from the the gases that get past the the piston rings and the pressure will look for other places to exit - like the upper part of the engine (which may be contributing to the sludge you found in the valve cover). The pressure may also exit the oil dip stick. Over time your engine compartment can get a sort of oily build up. The missing parts are an angular pipe that is routed up/around the engine to the carb where it mates with a PCV (post combustion vapor) valve that connects to the tube off the carb. I’ll send pictures of mine. You actually still some of the parts to the system in place (that bracket/hook off the valve cover breather) - that holds the angular tube in place. There is likely another similar bracket off the front of the thermostat housing - also holds the tube in place. Earlier trucks did not have this system - instead they had a breather at the top of the oil fill tube. Fingers crossed the exhaust is sealed for good!!!

Hi Charles, Thanks for this. The clips behind the seats are still there, so just missing the crank handle. Will get searching. The missing breather parts are good to know. I will get them. Maybe I can shape my own pipe. What is the interior diameter of that tune roughly? I only ask as I have a lot of copper brake pipe left over. Perhaps I could use that. And yes, there is indeed a bracket/hook still attached to the thermostat housing. I put it all back together as it came apart. I’m pretty sure it was there when I ran the car and when my parents took it over for a bit, the garage must have blocked that pipe when they changed the carb. 👍

Good idea to re-torque the head, but if it moved any, which it sounds like it did you need to re check the valve clearances. Would have been better to do the head first. I don't know if it is the case with land rovers, but most british cars specify doing tappets warm, almost certainly is, at least you have some practice now as you need to be reasonably fast, otherwise the valves you set first are warm and the ones you do last, less so. It takes practice to get good at setting the valves, but it makes a huge difference, skilled mechanics can tune other issues out of the engine in this process. I have a MGB and tiny changes to valve clearances make a huge difference, like 20% increase in power....... thats a highly tuned car with a cam, raised compression and special pistons I built to be fast. However I also have a Minor and it makes a huge difference on that to, its about getting that last 10-20% out of what you have. Plugs are not showing running rich, so get the exhaust and tappets done, look at timing and don't touch the carb until everything else is as it should be. In fact I would expect to see the plugs quite black on a car that hasn't had long runs, so you should also check for vacuum leaks. You do this by spraying carb cleaner around all the places the inlet may leak and listening for an increase in idle speed. If you buy a timing light you can read rpm of the light and dont have to do it by ear. A lot to explain.... any questions, just ask.

Hi Greg, thanks for this. I can imagine that a pro could get the best out of the engine. And I think this is not the first time I will be tweaking it myself. Good call about the Head, it’s worth just checking the valves again now.

Thanks, I am still running the 15” rims and thinking about moving to 16” to give me better tire options so I can smooth out the ride a bit.

If you do, make sure you buy modern 16“ rims. That way you can use tubeless tyres.

I need a starting handle for mine - much better for turning the engine over than a spanner on the starter dog :-) I get a bit depressed sometimes about the quality of parts. It doesn’t look like it would take much more, if any, effort to make an exhaust correctly... instead, it’s hours of fettling... oops, I’m off for a little lie down :-)

I think the pipe between the oil filler and the carb is an emissions thing, so depends how strict the TUV test is. Also, blocking it at the oil filler neck would lead to excess crankcase pressure I would have thought. Normally if that pipe isn't connected to the carb it goes into an oil catch can which is open to atmospheric pressure. Graham

It goes from the oil filler to a crankcase ventilation valve that sits behind the carb which connects to the hose that you have a bolt in at the carb adapter.

@@patrickd4844 that makes sense. Otherwise the crankcase would have continuous negative pressure.

Hi... I notice that you Weber choke has a large spring attached to one of the main body screws with a bracket.... mine doesn't have this and the choke sticks a bit.... did you put this in to help with the choke return?

Looking great. With starting the battery could be issue, other thing is timing may be slightly to advanced. I had this issue changed the battery and still had the issue. Found I had to back timing off slightly. On the exhaust sealing that joint I had a similar issue could not get mine to idle properly. Used a vacuum cleaner on the blow outlet connected to end of exhaust and dish washer in spray bottle to find leaks. You can by sheets of exhaust gasket on Amazon and cut your own just make hole in Centre slightly smaller. Or you can get one already made up. www.amazon.com/Walker-31383-Hardware-Gasket/dp/B0019I9SV4 On the valve adjustment. If it still chuffs afterwards sometimes can be caused by a ridge warn into rocker arm. I have this issue just looking at easiest and best place to get replacements to Africa.

Hi Patrick, I have 16“ Wolf rims with 235 x 85 R16 tyres. It’s a decent set up over the old 750 cross ply tyres as it adds a bit of comfort to the hard ride.
