Robert Anthoney There are many helping functions in KSP, such as showing center of mass and center of lift. To make plane/SSTO fly stable be sure that center of lift is very close to center of mass. It is half of success. Second half is to provide sufficent thrust and fuel.

Bradley Whistance yes pls First off, how do you plan them?
@BradleyWhistance
7 жыл бұрын
I'll get back to you after work tonight
@BradleyWhistance
7 жыл бұрын
The main issue planning gravity assists is timing. Gravity assists are the free lunch of orbital maneuvers, since you are not paying for the dV you get out of them! As a result, adding normal and radial components to your orbit around Kerbol can generally be done as needed. The one thing that will get you into trouble is timing, since you simply will not be able to directly transfer to a planet that is completely out of transfer window. The good news is you only need to be close-ish to a decent transfer window. Since you have essentially free dV, you can make it work by throwing in what would normally be fuel-wastefully large amounts of normal and radial velocity with your assists. Therefore, I will start with the planning of timing of each leg before discussing the assists themselves. There are two ways to approach planning a complex transfer, involving one or more gravity assists. You can start by finding out a transfer window for the last transfer in the profile, in this example Kerbin to Jool, and work back from there, finding a good transfer at each point. Or you can start with just taking an efficient transfer for the first leg, and more or less wing the rest of the assists. This is more effective than it sounds, and it is what I normally do. There are a lot of levers you can pull to make your timing correct, even if it naturally would not be. In this case, I dealt with the timing issues on the Eve to Kerbin leg by simply approaching Eve in a way that left me with the right radial velocity relative to Kerbol that had me cross Kerbin's orbit with the right timing. If I had more significant timing issues here, I could of put myself into a resonant orbit with Eve and transferred back to Kerbin after a second fly-by of Eve. The Kerbin to Kerbin leg was, as described in the video, a question of using the equation for Orbital Period (T∼a), and ensuring that you put yourself on a resonant orbit with Kerbin after the first fly by of Kerbin. Since Jool is on a really long orbital period, you want to make sure you can transfer there directly with the second Kerbin flyby. This can be done by making sure your orbit in the previous step gets you to Kerbin at something close to a good transfer window to Jool. Since multiple resonant orbits are available, this is just a question of planning in the previous step. For the geometry of the assists themselves, its important to remember what a gravity assist can do. Lets take the assist off of eve seen in this video. When I enter Eve's SOI, I am travelling at a certain velocity relative to Eve. When I leave Eve's SOI, I will be travelling at the same velocity relative to Eve. However, this velocity will be in a different direction. The goal is to enter Eve's SOI with a velocity that is not in the direction of our desired velocity relative to Kerbol, and leave with velocity that is more close to our desired velocity relative to Kerbol. In this case, I approach Eve with a velocity relative to Eve with a large normal component. My fly by is at a high latitude, which makes me leave at a much less inclined direction. I leave with my velocity relative to Eve in the direction of Eve's velocity relative to kerbol. I therefore have greatly increased own velocity relative to Kerbol. Put differently. I entered Eve at an inclined route, curved around the side of the planet, and exited more flat, and more in the direction of Eve's orbit around Kerbol. It has flung me back into space at a higher velocity relative to Kerbol, while conserving energy in the Bill's Craft/Eve system (Technically not in KSP, since planets are on rails). I am tired, and I did not plan on writing nearly this much. I apologize if this is unreadable, and will take a look over it tomorrow.

@Bradley Whistance also, you should try using the latest fork of the B9 Procedural Wings Mod (designed to work in KSP 1.2.2- I use it myself) for the carrier-deck next time. Not only will this allow you to build a much larger carrier-deck with far fewer parts, but it will also allow you to fit fuel in the deck itself! Which could make for a smaller transfer-vehicle to Laythe (as you can fit fuel for the transfer in the carrier deck) and a higher fuel-capacity for refueling spaceplanes with fewer parts required!

It's a cylinder of reaction wheels inside a structural fuselage. The inner cylinder has the propeller attached to the ends, and is detached with a decoupler from the rest of the craft. it is now a separate craft that can spin using the reaction wheels. since it is trapped in the cylinder, it pushes the craft forward

Small radial ore tanks are far more compact than they should be. I was able to avoid part clipping with them. In this craft, I ended up switching to the normal ore tanks, which are less compact, to reduce part count. (Still was over 1100 on the carrier launch) With those, part clipping is necessary.

For carrier to maintain stability at high bank requires another bottom structure design. Remember big XVIII century ships. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/Esquema_de_un_navio_de_linea.svg/220px-Esquema_de_un_navio_de_linea.svg.png But, do archymedian forces work in KSP?
@BradleyWhistance

buoyancy functions more or less properly in KSP. This design is a bit different than a typical carrier in reality, because it is a twin hulled design. This made stability very easy in this case.
