Speaking as an Aussie (totally different climate) - I like what you're trying to do here, especially the ability to 'stealth camp'. Wifey & I tried out a couple of camping trips in my 110 wagon (Extreme). Nothing flash, just a raised platform to fit a double bed & used the cavity space for stove, food, water, clothing, etc. We thought the best things were ease of travel & where you could park. Downsides were too many to name, so we opted for a decent camper trailer. IMHO I think you're going to need at least a decent tent for those protracted periods of weather, insect attack or just the need to sit in a chair at a real table. But love the 'cubby house' feel to your set-up. Good luck & happy camping.
@BOBC001

Bill you are right it does allow some undercover camping that no one suspects you are actually using it overnight. Even street parking on city outskirts if you are careful. There are down sides and I have a hammock packed away which I can string up in the trees from time to time. No luxury though, you got to just grit your teeth and get on with it! Thanks for your comments and 'live long and prosper' mate :-)

Hi, I have a friend who made a wooden box to place on your D110 and during a trip to Patagonia, making a fording a river, wet the drawer ..... The wood swelled and could never open it again. We had to break the wooden box to take what was inside. All this, apart from the awful smell that is inside the vehicle after a inundation as this. I recommend that "NO" uses wooden structures within a 4x4. On the other hand, excellent work !!! Greetings from Argentina.

Angie. Thanks, I am 5 foot 11 inches in old money or 1.8m. I can stretch out ok. The futon was too long so I cut about 100mm off it to fit it in. I added hooks so that when the futon was folded up as a seat I could re-attach the cut off part which helps support the legs. You can see that in the video, it works fine, offers storage below as well. Good luck, Bob

You could build up the side bulkheads to the sleeping height much in the same way I did. Then on the floor lie some flat boards pre drilled with air holes. These would then be lifted and turned sideways to span across the bulkheads giving you the main platform. Tip and slide the front seat forwards to give the extra space in the front for your head. Maybe that would work.. You might need some folding supports under the boards in the middle though if its to sleep more than one! Bob

I have a Land Rover Series 3 SWB and the rear is approximately 1.1 metres long by 1.4 metres wide, so it is likely to be too small to sleep in without curling up, even the diagonal is not long enough for most average men. However, the diagonal of the entire interior is about 2.1 metres, so you could consider using a hammock hung diagonally, which I think could work very well and be very comfortable. Or you get a tent! Good luck and let's see it when you've completed it. Regards!

Hi Bob, I like what you have done here, it reminds me of our Scottish camping trips in my Dads old safari in the 70's.. also I wouldn't have approached this any other way apart from I used supafoil and recycled foam to line the back of my Caddy, which also gives plenty of room for one (or two close friends) ps.. nice bit of woodwork too.. well done :)

Ross, If I could help I would but unfortunately I didnt keep any sketches or dimensions. It was all butt joints with the timber frame using 42mm sq planed wood. I allowed the frame to finish about 3- 6mm wider than the metal bulkheads (wheel arches) so I could fit thin insulation then a skin of 3mm plywood down to the floor. then trim it off with 40mm aluminium angle to a 6mm plywood floor sealing it all down. Basically I measured as I went. Hopefully the video will help you. Good luck, Bob.

Patrick, maybe I did make it complicated but I more or less bought the van and just worked it up as a design as I went. It had no linings and was a tin (aluminium) box. Without insulation it would have dripped condensation so I insulated it. I guess I could have bought a station wagon as you did and had all round views however my van is just a basic conversion that I travel alone in. I guess we both drive vehicles that gives us pleasure so good luck with your travels, regards, Bob.

In my opinion you have made a very practical single person go anywhere camper. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas. I have a LWB series 3 and I am thinking of doing something similar. I just wonder what it would be like to try and remove that self adhesive insulation if one wished to convert back? All in all a great job though.
@BOBC001

Kevin, thanks for your positive comments and yes practicality was my aim when I did the conversion. I agree the insulation adhesive could prove tricky to remove but whether to use adhesive or not all came down to compromises in the end. I felt insulation was critical so made my decision and moved on. Thanks again for your comment, regards, Bob.

I've just measured-up and think you could have a flat bed across from the very back of the SWB to the passenger's seat. You'd have to put a plank across the interior bulkhead to do it, but it would give you sleeping space. So you'd need to think about how you would make the bed's plank collapsible for easy day storage. This means that I could convert my SWB instead of buying a 109 or 110.

In the video I fitted a small wash basin. I do small tasks like shave and clean up dirty dishes. For washing I boil the kettle and use the basin, using a face cloth which I can then take the grime on my body wring it out and repeat etc. The water collects in a container below the sink which I can empty when I like. I have also a battery shower which pumps water up from a folding bucket. You can get showers with a hand pump not battery operated. It all stows in the cupboard below the stove. Bob

Clive, Hi thanks for your comments. I didnt weight the items, possibly the heaviest single item was the sheet of 6mm Plywood I put down on the floor. Other than that the frames were clad in 3mm ply and a bit of aluminium trim was used to tidy up the finishes. Insulation was lightweight, I would guess possibly 40kg max. My canoe on the roof is 30kg and my bike and fittings 10kg. Overall I guess when travelling, which I do solo, its adding the equivalent weight of a passenger possibly 2 max. Bob

Hi I used Foil faced acoustic foam sheets with self adhesive backing from a company Acoustafoam FR rated. Box of 5 sheets. Size = 1000mm x 600mm x 25mm. Coverage = 3.0 sq. mtrs. Colour - silver foil. Its expensive but stops side panel and roof drumming and vibration. All edges I sealed with 100mm self adhesive foil faced tape overlapping each butted panel, that stops condensation. You will find Acoustafoam on the web!

Over here in the Netherlands you can buy perfect foldable canoe's from Sweden. Problem solved. I do not critisize you its just the fact that a Defender is very small inside.
