Update email from crt 8/2/24 1700hrs - Due to heavy rainfall, a significant landslip on an 18m high cutting has completely blocked the canal and towpath. We're working with our contractors to develop a plan to start to clear the large trees and debris from the canal. Unfortunately these works are in an awkward location, meaning it could take longer to resolve. Taking into account the popularity of the North Oxford Canal, as recently noted by our lockage reports, our priority is to re-open navigation as soon as possible. We'll aim to provide a further update on Friday 23rd February, once our contractors have assessed the situation.

Update on 23rd of February, hardly a priority then. There should have already been a plan in place as this cutting has been unstable for over a decade.

Unfortunately things like this are going to become all to common on the canals . Look down any canal and you will see huge tree branches overhang canals. Which in turn are putting a huge strain on the roots of trees . Eventually the ground around them will give way... especially in windy conditioins.. Anyway folks stay safe and well.

Agreed. Unfortunately for crt it would have probably been cheaper if they’d been proactive to secure the cutting rather than having to react to this. 🤷🏻♂️

There's been other landslips in this area. Seems to have been a lot of trees felled in places so that doesn't help as they aren't stabilising the bank anymore

I agree the massive trees catch the wind and get torn out thus initiating the slips. CRT should cut the trees down in cuttings where the banks are soft and liable to slippage.

The landslip where those rock filled cages are took long enough to sort so i think its going to be closed for a long long time. The unstability of the rest of the cutting will probably take weeks to survey before they can even start. Thanks for the video

I was there last week and it was a massive pile of clay covering the whole canal contractors working on it all the trees have been removed but it is still a danger to public and a pump is pumping water from one side of the mound to the other.
