Lane was on a bull named Taking Care of Business.... He successfully completed his ride that scored 87 points. It was pretty muddy out there and when Lane was in the mud, the bull got him in the side of his ribcage with its horn, breaking several ribs. When Lane rose to his feet and headed to the chutes, his ribs punctured his heart. This is the real story of what happened that day. It was a terrible day for the rodeo community but his memory lives on! In my opinion, a great man and friend...

For all the arguments here, I actually knew Lane and for some reason today, he was really on my mind. I decided to go on here and see if there were any videos of him and I ran across a few. It really brought back a lot of memories for me. Sadly, ladies and gentlemen, I am appalled at the use of words on here for arguments sake. Telling someone you will get them, or hurt them, or even insult a lady on here shows me that you have no idea what being a true cowboy is. It is not the cowboy way...

Lane was truly the most fearless and best bull rider to ever come along. Before this rodeo, several people actually tried to convince Lane not to get on this bull. He had been on him a month before and got mauled, but walked away with only cuts and bruises. Lane was not afraid to ride any bull they threw under him, he just wouldn't turn down the ride. He is honestly the epitome of COWBOY

How does an 1800-2000 bull get hurt by a 145 lb cowboy? Answer: He DOESN'T. PBR bulls are well taken care of. they are in less danger of being injured during an event than the sidewalk has of being injured by a skateboarder. Only the cowboys get injured. Brave men in a most dangerous sport. This is NOT bullfighting! Bulls are never abused/hurt/killed. TCOB wasn't put down, and continued to work until he was retired to stud. Not a bad way to spend ones remaining years. Rest In Peace Lane!

Lane wasn't standing yet, he had just landed in the slippery, slick mud, and was raising himself up on his hands and knees, keeping his eyes on the bull. He knew the bull was there, right there, charging at him from behind. He tried to scoot away, but his cowboy boots gave him no traction on the muddy ground. He tried to lunge forward fast, but the bull was faster. The bull hit Lane with his head, either in the back of Lane's legs, or his seat, and knocked Lane flat on the ground.

For the people asking would he have lived if he was wearing a vest. That is between him and God. If you know anything about Lane, he was a God fearing man that boasted an honest days work for an honest days pay. He never bragged about what he was, he just showed people. To his surprise, he was really good at it and he could earn a living do it! He never felt like he was at work when he was at the rodeo. A real cowboy lives by the word of the land, and that is always respect. Respect others ppl

Johnny, Takin' care of business became a stud bull after he was retired. He died in 1999. You are correct in that his name was changed after Lane's death. He was used a few years after, then put out to stud.

@UniQuexMoJo His skin was not punctured. When Lane did his signature flip off the left hind quarter, the bull did an unexpected 180' and was right there at his back. His slick bottomed boots made it almost impossible for him to find traction in the mud. He tried to lunge foward but the bull was already right there. It's horns got him in the seat and pushed him to the ground. There wasn't much Lane could do at this point so he curled up on his side and that's when the bull hooked him

Lane turned on his right side, trying to keep his eyes on this animal that weighed a ton. Then he started to curl up. If he couldn't get away, then he knew he had to make himself as small as possible. Lane was 5' 11" and he once said that "being taller than most bull riders also means that there is more of me for a bull to hook." The bull, still agitated and moving forward, never stopping, turned and dipped his head, and pushed his right horn into Lane's left side. The horn did not break skin

Rodeo does not abuse animals it gives them a shot at life, for anybody who says rodeos are abusive to the animals, got to look where those animals would be.They would not get a chance at life but would be sent to the slaughterhouse.Anybody who thinks death is a better option than rodeo is an idiot.By condemning rodeo you are also disrespecting your own heritage because rodeo is honouring how our ancestors lived when they first came to North America.Rodeo has its roots in what they did everyday

Another thing that I have seen here that totally disgusts me, is the fact that there are so many know it alls about bullriding. It is completely different today. It is a much safer sport than it used to be and there is a little more money in it. If it offends some people, then it just offends them, they are entitled to their opinion. I have seen it myself. The great bulls never need any convincing to do their jobs but there are a lot of flat footers too! Don't lie to yourself and say otherwise.

I barrel race, and ride on a drill team. In no way at professional rodeos is there ANY abuse going on. I ride with the NPRA and if you get seen mistreating your animal, you are immediately kicked out. And that's not just the NPRA that does that. Also, you must consider, most of us at rodeo's are 100-250 pounds, dealing with animals from 1000-2000 lbs. and a mind of their own. Those animals do a LOT worse to eachother in the wild than we could do to them. Don't let Peta brain wash you.

I find it pretty demeaning to cowboys for a kid to come on here and represent so many with so little respect. A real cowboy doesn't talk that kind of tough guy crap to anyone at any time. The use of your words are very disturbing to those of us that work hard to uphold the true cowboy way. A real cowboy works hard for a living, loves God, and says yes sir and no ma'am. What is even more sad to me, is the fact that you have 28 thumbs up. No wonder the cowboy way is fading so fast...
