Lara Croft walking into the darkness with that violin playing was the swan song for the original era of Tomb Raider, which would be followed by a decent reboot to another reboot that deviates the franchise.

It's not just about what happened to Kurtis (obviously the fact that the blade seemed to point in the direction of the gate means that he is alive 0:51), but it's also about what happened to Lara herself. As far as we know, she's still accused of homicide (multiple one) so after leaving the Strahov facility - did she manage to clear her name? Or did she choose to stay in hiding? Did she return to England? And what happened to Gunderson? So many unexplained questions.
@LabyrinthMike

I thought there was some DLC that answered some of these questions.
@laracroftvideos
3 жыл бұрын
@@LabyrinthMike No, there was no DLC. Core Design (the developers behind Tomb Raider) were working on a sequel, but it got scrapped due to the unfavorable reception AoD had received. Eidos then hired Crystal Dynamics to develop new Tomb Raider games, and in an effort to bring the series “”back to its roots”” and make the public forget about AoD, it was decided Crystal’s TR games would be set in an alternate/vague universe of sorts... Lara was redesigned, her braid was switched to a ponytail, and she was still an archeologist but her backstory was completely rewritten and it’s uncertain whether Lara’s adventures from the Core Design games were still canon or not (in Crystal’s timeline); Croft Manor in Legend/Anni/Underworld is an almost exact replica of the one from the Angelina Jolie movies and looks nothing like Lara’s home in the classic games). To make things even more problematic, Crystal rebooted the franchise again for the second time (supposedly to tell Lara’s origin story and to add more depth and complexity to her character which I find funny because to me they turned her into a really bland and boring character imo).
@LabyrinthMike

@@laracroftvideos OK, it took a bit for me to find what gave me the idea that there is some explanation about what happened after AOD. It's not a DLC, so it must have been in a book. Is it canon? IDK. kzitem.info/news/bejne/r26kmWagh5OinY4

@@LabyrinthMike Ah, the Tomb Raider novels! You’re right, you can kind of see those as sequels although they don’t really provide any closure. Out of the three, I’d say The Amulet of Power is the most notable as it connects Last Revelation with AoD. The remainder are their own self contained adventures afaik, and Kurtis doesn’t appear in them.

@ReluctantWarrior

@@leon_grande Played the reboot, they aren't bad games by any means. But they are bad Tomb Raider games. Its all too vapid and Americanized. Too linear. Lara doesn't get much development as a character between games and not in a way where she resembles the Lara we know (something Crystal Dynamics promised), her control is too automated. The dual pistols are only used as a cheap tease that is never followed through on. The tombs themselves are just short, one-room puzzles rather than the vast ancient vistas they once were. Not to.mention, Rise was exclusive to Xbox for a whole year. That'll sour things. For a time where we have come so far in games. Tomb Raider sure has taken a lot of steps back.
@leon_grande

@@ReluctantWarrior Yeah I get what u say, but I've have appreciated their tentative to reinvent the game. I was a huuuuge fan of Angel of darkness, Legend etc... but probably nowadays many gamers prefer more action instead of exploring (in fact Tomb Raider 2013 was the game that sold the most in the Tomb Raider history)
@ReluctantWarrior
3 жыл бұрын
@@leon_grande That is why we have Uncharted. Which is about action and a cinematic presentation first and foremost and exploration is secondary. The irony is that there is an untapped niche in the market for the type of game Tomb Raider used to be back in the Core Design days. Its far been unproven whether or not the classic formula with some modern tweaks wouldn't work to fill that, but it easily could. The demand is certainly there, going by the thousands people saying they want the Classic Lara back every time Crystal releases a new outfit for Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. Years back, people said that survival horror games weren't something people wanted anymore, then Resident Evil 7 and the RE2 remake came out and proved that sentiment wrong. People thought mascot platformers were a thing of the past. But then Ratchet and Clank 2016, as well as the Crash and Spyro remakes proved that they were still viable. Only a few years ago, it was thought that single-player games weren't in demand anymore, But Spider Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Ace Combat 7 firmly buried that thought process too. I also liked Legend, Anniversary and Underworld for what they were, but they too were Americanized and trying to be Hollywood-esque. Watered-down exploration with very linear level design, Lara was changed to the point where she was only recognizable on a surface-level, plus she had lost much of her hardness. They're were way too many human enemies, and Lara's control was again, much too automated. Legend and Underworld were both very short. Anniversary is the best of the bunch, but its use of the Legend gameplay-style and design philosophy ran counter to the design and structure of the game it was remaking, which led to most of the levels being watered down and it ditched most of its pulpy, yet grittier feel for the more camp tone of Legend. Underworld was a bizzare meshing of half-hearted classic elements clumsily meshed to Crystal Dynamics' vision. It was strangely unpolished too. (Yes, AOD wasn't all that polished either, but at least we know why; and its clear AOD would have been an amazing game if Eidos had given Core the time they required to complete as intended.)
