What a rush! I flew in this to Honolulu this morning and the water looked amazing. Diamond Head and Waikiki looked beautiful! The water was sheet glass, and from 2000 feet you could see reef surrounding the southern shore of Oahu. I called a fellow veteran and asked if he wanted to get out there and catch some Giant Trevally, also know as GT's. He was stoked!
We headed out around mid-morning into the early afternoon. Everyone manned their respective stations-my buddy and his wife were using extra large poppers and I kept switching between top water and swim baits.
We were about two hours into our fishing expedition and about 15 stories deep. I remember telling a story about a similar trip where friends and I were out fishing for GT's. I detailed on how we weren't catching anything, and when we did it was like a surprise and complete chaos. All of a sudden my buddies wife hooks up! I quickly reeled my line in and grab the Go Pro. I didn't get much of the fight which was epic!
My buddies wife normally reels with her right hand, and today she had a left handed reel. Not Ideal for GT fishing.
She said, "the fish bit with so much force, I didn't expect it."
The drag on the reel was tight. So tight you can not pull it, and yet when the fish hit the reel screamed! It was rad to see her pull in such a beautiful fish on an epic day of fishing.
Throughout the years, I personally have only seen two of these fish caught. As a commercial fisherman, I rarely encountered these Thread Finned Trevally or Kagami while diving. These fish are as rare as they are beautiful.
Although the video is short, I will always remember this trip for the rest of my life. It is not everyday, that you get to share the your back yard with a fellow veteran/friends and catch one of Hawaii's rare GT's.
