@@BatCaveCreations typically, but only like 3 or 4 strokes. But thats more out of habit than useful I think.

Yes! Enjoyed that you tried the product! Don't forget to educate us newbies on what these different planes actually do ;). Looks like it was tough to go through that end grain. Maybe just to 6K or 10K for end grain? Will be watching for that test. You could hear the difference in your video.

Oh 100% I learned to slow down cus you can def hear the difference. Imma get some shapton (not glass) and test them out. Will deff have a video. I HATE planing endgrain so if a higher k makes it better I'm goin for it haha And ur right I do need to remember to use the tools and explain what they do. Thank you!

I don't have any experience with these 3 planes. A few years ago when looking at shoulder planes, I chose the Veritas medium because of the set screws in the body and the cost is about 80 bucks less than the lie nielsen equivalent. So far I really like it and I don't have buyers remorse. But one day I would like to try these others just to compare them for myself. Who knows maybe I will have to reassess my purchase? Again a really good video. Please keep them coming!

Thank you!! I did a review of the veritas vs LN large shoulder planes. Imo veritas won that one! So you made a good purchase :D

I use my 073 when I have a slightly off plane (high) molding glued to, for example, the edge of a table, or the countertop of a builtin and other similar situations. The Record excels at removing the finest shavings to bring the molding down to the same plane as the table/counter surface. I use it cross-grain, starting with the toe on the molding and the heel on the counter, planing at 90 degrees or at a slight skew instead of parallel to the high molding. Nothing works better.

Being that the only change that Lie Nielsen made is the thicker blade, it seems odd that you experienced chatter on their plane and not on the sharper but thinner bladed Record plane. Heck, we've always been told that the thicker blades would reduce chatter....

I've never seen a 94 in the UK. It seems to be a lot bigger than the 93. The Record 073 is pretty common over here. Goes for £100 - £150, so a lot less than a new LN.

That is hilarious because when I was looking for a 94 everyone told me you can only find them in the UK hahha You guys are lucky with the availability of Records! get the record not the LN ahahha

$0.02 from the peanut gallery. Check with an expert, like over at the Just Plane Fun channel, I do not think Stanley or Record made many laminated irons in all the years they made good tools. A simple O1 steel is cheaper to make and cost was always an issue. When I hear you say “laminated iron” I think plane O1 tool steel. No trolling intended, just a learning opportunity. Keep up the informative content.

60k or 16k? I sharpen at 16k as is Rob Cosman. You’re right more sharpening but it only takes 32sec.

60k I usually go 1k then strop (12-18k) Cosman doesn't strop he doesn't need to when you go 12k+ cus that stone is your strop :)
