Automaker heavyweight Toyota has announced the largest manufacturer recall in that corporation's history, as over 4 million cars may feature a defective accelerator pedal. Jim Axelrod reports.
OK, if this ever happens to you, don't panic. use common sense. SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, even if the engine revs at max RPM's, that's better than dying trust me.

If you ever get in a vehicle with a stuck gas pedal, Heres what you do: AUTOMATIC: Push in Brake (keep pushed in), Shift into Neutral, stop, put in park, turn off car immedietly. MANUAL: Push in Clutch, Shift into nuetral, Brake, parking brake, turn off car. there are probably more ways to do it in a manual.

About the Toyota Prius recall software update. My experience driving my Toyota Prius 300 miles a day is that when the battery is full, sometimes it has a higher acceleration type variant, after using the battery and it drops the percentage level the system returns to normal. For example: when I go down a big hill and brake a lot the battery is fully charged, it helps in the reverse brake of the engine like trucks and planes, this is a safety system to avoid a high speed. I don't think it's dangerous for someone who knows how to drive correctly, but for an inexperienced person it can be a different experience. My car has 349 mik of mine, new battery, new engine, new shock absorbers, always new brakes and I love it.

Although it was a tragedy people died, I had an old Mercedes with mechanical throttle linkage. I just bought it and the throttle got stuck. Well, I panicked briefly but then common sense took over, brakes will work for a couple pumps with the ignition off. I just shut the key off until I figured out what the heck happened. I came to a safe stop. But to have time to make a 911 call and a car full of people but no clear thoughts. It’s difficult to process.

Floor mats look to certainly be an issue in some cars, but what about all the reports of cars that are plodding along at 35mph, and then all of a sudden surge past 100mph. If you're just going 35mph, your gas pedal will never reach the mat. A stuck pedal does not speed up, it STAYS where it is. And it looked that in order to get the pedal stuck, the DRIVER has no near "floor" the gas anyway. Something stinks.

The problem is an electronic problem. A weak magnetic pulse from cell phone or road sensor will cause full throttle effect. The hall effect sensor picks up magnetic road sensor pulse. Take a magnet and place it near your gas pedal and see what happens. There is a magnetic strip inside that sits in front of the sensor. The void is where they magnetize the tapered metal strips. The metal part they are putting in looks like it will shield the hall effect sensor.

Yeah, pull you're e-brake at high speed, see how that works out. Putting the car into neutral is a good idea, however. At least the engine will just rev itself out while you coast to a stop (with moderate e-brake use). Putting the car into reverse at high speed won't do anything - the electronics prevent such a mistake from being made.

The gas pedal can get stuck in the floor carpets for many cars not only Toyotas, the pedal is designed to work with all the floor mats pinned in its place , people sometimes remove the carpets and forget to pin them back in, the gas pedal got stuck on me once because I didn't pin the carpet back after I got it cleaned but since I have a manual gearbox I just hit the clutch and break. If I was like that driver would have called 911 an wait to die. the problem isnt with the cars manufactured in japan the cars that have this recall are american built cars do your research before you start bashing americas #1 car manufacturer and the media is simply putting fear in the eyes of the public. most people have two or three floor mats stacked up on top of a factory floor mat then the pedal gets stuck. so all in all the part that is getting a change is the american built pedal and a little training top the customer so they dont stack floor mats.
