I had wanted a Martin 000-18 since I was 16 years old when I saw Elizabeth Cottons at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. I’m very passionate about folk music, and cotton is probably my favorite guitarist. Fast forward several years, (a wife and two children later) to once I was finally established enough to upgrade to a real wood quality guitar, I had saved up the $2500 for the Martin. However, after going into my local guitar store and seeing a Larrivee L-05, and then playing it, it was not only the best looking guitar I’ve ever seen but also the best sounding. The guitar naturally sounds like it was EQ’d by a genius sound engineer. I’ve had it for two years now, and it’s a dream come true. I can’t believe it’s actually my guitar. Cheers! -Christian

It's an amazing feeling to pick up and play a guitar that sounds so amazing that you know it's the one. I found a Larrivee that sounded like that and a sleazy guitar center salesman was trying to sell me a more expensive guitar just because I obviously had the money for whatever I want. He couldn't understand that I wanted the best sounding guitar and not the most expensive one!😅

I found out about Larrivee in late 2003-early 2004. I was doing online research on all solid wood acoustics because I was looking to upgrade from an all laminate MIK Epiphone. I was able to play Martins, Taylors and Gibson, but couldn't find a guitar that I both liked, and could afford. I ended up stumbling upon Larrivee via the internet. There weren't any Larrivee dealers near me, so I took a leap of faith based on reviews. I started out with a D-03R. I currently own 2 Larrivees, a 2004 D-09 that I bought new that year. I gigged a lot with that guitar, and it's really opened up. My 2nd Larrivee is a very gently used 2010 D-09BZ that I bought in the fall of 2014 as a present to myself for getting out the other side of a major medical situation. I got an absolutely screaming deal on the guitar. I paid less for the used D-09BZ than the cost of a new Martin HD-28. I think Larrivees offer a great bang for the buck relative to Martin, Taylor or Gibson. Final note: great job on the video, the short Larrivee history was as especially nice touch.

A Larrivee "base model" is sort of a misnomer in my book. Their entire line of guitars exhibit exceptional quality (all solid woods!). Most of the enhancements going up the line seem related to the "bling" factor. Beautiful guitars at all points to be sure, but more importantly just wonderfully crafted guitars across the entire line up. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments.

@@anothergraypicker My sentiments exactly. As you climb the ladder with Larrivee, you're not necessarily getting a guitar that sounds qualitatively better- or is better constructed. You're just getting a guitar with more flair. I've always loved the look of a simple solid wood guitar with a satin finish. If you start with great wood, it makes sense to let its natural feel and beauty shine. Thanks for sharing your video!

I have a BT-40m Baritone Acoustic Larrivee and it absolutely mops the floor with all other acoustic baritones. It is the only acoustic baritone that meets at the 12th fret with the bridge pushed back a few inches to get the ergonomics of the guitar to be nearly identical to regular acoustics outside of a few custom luthier builds I have seen like the one Bear Davis did a review on here on youtube. Do yourself a favor and find a Larrivee Baritone they are second to none not just in playability but tone and note separation. Almost all the rest meet at the 14th fret and don't have good tone at B-B or A#-A# trust me they are absolutely incredible.

Like the presenter here I replace the pegs (poor fit, kept popping out) and the black tuners because half of the buttons broke. It’s an entry level orchestra model. The body fits my body perfectly and like some have said, the tones are beautiful, especially the clear highs and lush middle tones.and you can hear it on the first strum. Just wanted to commend you on your excellent video. I'm another 'gray picker', but have only taken up learning for 2.5 yr.s. I'm already sold on Larrivees. Not expert, all I have to go by is what something sounds like and how it makes me feel. Similar to you, while something of good quality and the tone matters much - I'm without unlimited resources to afford boutique, (not warranted at my level ability, as yet, anyhow). Even at that, the evenness of tone, the quality construction, and the aesthetics, (form and function combined), make these guitars a cut above at any price, it would seem. I originally got a D40, but decided and changed over to a D60 (both wonderful but different sounds - mahogany vs rosewood, would like to have kept both). Anyhow, your video beautifully articulates the features of your model and Larrivee s in general, and was very helpful at the time for my deciding and confirming my purchase of one for myself. Also, ..I have to say - your easy-going, comprehensive, informative and wonderfully articulated presentation is very pleasant to view. Your guitar playing is beautiful. I can appreciate how this guitar, no doubt, makes your heart smile as you play and express what can't readily be put into words - but this fine tool helps afford. Thanks much !

Also very glad to hear your that you didn’t shy away from pursuing your desire to learn regardless of when you found the opportunity. Like you, I am so grateful to have this wonderful “hobby” to contribute to my own personal “pursuit of happiness.” Our skills are fun to work on for the pleasure and "connectedness" they bring us. Also thanks for the kind words on the production and the playing. In truth, there are days where I “connect” well, even surprising myself, and days where I just stink. From my starter guitar...a very nice small bodied Seagull, I tried to like a very nice Taylor 414 but "learned" that body style was just too large for me to handle. That led me to an on-line search on guitar forums where I was introduced to Larrivee guitars and to my eventual dealer, Guitar Adoptions. Starting with a custom OO-05 sitka over mahogany, I soon found myself with two Larrivee parlors (all koa and spruce/rosewood). I had for a short time, a Larrivee OM-03 but again...body size too big. (You'd think I'd learn...guitar has to "fit" the player ;-). I'm now fortunate to also have an electric Larrivee Bakersfield and a Larrivee LS-30 Rosewood. My story is really similar to yours. I was looking for a first guitar many a year ago and played all the typical fair at local music shops: Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Guild, etc. Then, one day, I walked in to a smaller shop in Ft. Worth, Tx. called Zoo Music. They had a brand with which I wasn't familiar. It was a Larrivee D-03 with Blackwood back and sides. I picked it up, tuned it and one strum sold the brand to me and I've never looked back I currently have a 2000 D-10, a 1997 D-03 and a 2003 L-03R to which I've added a K&K Pure Western Mini transducer pickup. I've also had a P-03R and an SD-60, both of which I regret selling! A byway, great review of one of the finest guitar brands on the planet.

I have several Larrivees, mostly older ones. Buying tip: I managed to get several of them for reasonable prices by buying ones that had professionally repaired cracks in the top or back. (High end guitars can be prone to cracks due to thinner finish. Hydrate your Larry in the winter if you run a furnace!) They sound balanced and full... top notch guitars. Thanks for the video.

Great Job Gray! You relate to my experiences perfectly. I am currently looking at a d03e but, like you, concerned about digging holes into beautifully built guitars. I will most likely keep an eye out for a a "L" non-electric than add a more upgraded in-hole electronic like an Ellipse Aurora. Having never played a Larrivee I will be making a close comparison with a guitar I acquired last year. A 04' built Baden "A" model. It is hand made using all solid tone woods by a guy who worked for Taylor for many years. Like you and your first strum of a Larrivee, I had that first impression of the Baden. After playing and owning several quality guitars, In my senior years and playing since my youth, I have settled on a Taylor 524ce, Takamine ef400sc-12, Blueridge 140a, Takamine fd360ce and most recently (caught by surprise) the Baden. Bought it on the spot. My brother-in-law has quite the collection of world class guitars so comparing to quality is second nature to me. I have learned through the years to put blue tape over the name on the headstock before playing a guitar. Maybe a Baden can be your next review?

Great comments Kurt. Unless I'm mistaken, Larrivee moved away from "barn door" style pre-amps, and now you're more likely to find sound hole mounted controls on their "e" model acoustics. The tones from my L.R. Baggs iMix system are wonderful though. Have always heard great things about Baden guitars, but sadly never even seen one in person. Would love to play some Baden, and if ever I do I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for your comments and thanks for watching.

I have been on the hunt for the ‘one’ for a few years. I have wanted one hog and one rosewood. I have owned three Taylor’s. 314, 414, 714. Two Martins. A D-18and a D-35. I got a Larrivee OM-05 (Mahogany) in the midst of all those. All of the others are sold now and I only have the Larrivee. It literally mopped the floor with all those other guitars. The only guitar I am currently looking for is an L-09 or LV-09 to be my rosewood go to. I will be set when I find a clean used one. Hard to get my hands on one. On a side note the d-18 was the most disappointing of all. It was awful. I tried and tried to like it. Got a professional set up to make sure. Absolutely hated it. So muddy. Tone was not even in the same zip code as my Larrivee. Cheap feel compared to the Larrivee also. I was shocked how bad it was.

Great story Jonathan. As mentioned in the video, I had the chance to play a "previously owned LV-09e when trying out guitars. The sound was wonderful. Only reason I didn't stop there was already owning a D35S with sitka/rosewood combo. I bet you'll find the pairing of an L body 09 series with your OM-05 "completes the dream." You may want to check out the Larrivee forum as part of your search. The forum members are most often very eager to help broaden your radar in the search for a Larrivee.

Great description of a great brand. I almost bought my first Larrivee, an L-09, in 1994 and have been tempted many times since. At the end of February 2020 my local shop got a C'03R Tommy Emmanuel in. It took me until this week to get the money for it. At 74 I'm thinning out my collection, but this guitar is a keeper, along with my Santa Cruz D and my Cordoba classical. The 03 models are no frills. They have everything you need, but none of the extras you might want. Solid rosewood body and Sitka spruce top, satin finish, maple binding, very resonant tone, but very balanced with great clarity. Unusually, it has a 12 fret neck with a 25.5 inch scale. So the bridge is centered in the lower bout instead of being up near the sound hole. The C body style is shaped somewhat like a classical, but larger with a volume almost as big as the L or a dreadnought. I thought I would find a older 0028 or 00028 Martin for my retirement. But this is the guitar. It fits me like a glove and plays like melted butter. I'm hoping when it gets broken in and loosens up it will match the Santa Cruz in volume and balance. And at $2195 it competes very well with guitars costing a thousand to fifteen hundred more.

But here are my best suggestions… -Contact Larrivee to see if there are any dealers in Mexico, www.larrivee.com/contact. It might be a good idea to check out some KZitem videos on the subject if you have not done this sort of transaction before. Best of luck. Hope you can find the guitar of your dreams. As to strings, given that everyone has their own individual preferences... I most often found D'Addario Bluegrass sets to sound wonderful. "Bluegrass" in this context simply indicates medium gauge lower strings and light gauge treble strings. These days I play light gauge "silk and bronze" sets as a concession to aging hands. When I began looking for a guitar to learn to play I set myself a budget of $500.00. I first bought an Ovation for $350.00 but found my fingers were always crowded on the neck and it was generally uncomfortable for me. Sold it and started to look for something else, again with the $500.00 budget, which a bit of research indicated was reasonable. I must have tried more than fifty guitars. Then, like the gentleman says in this video, I strummed a Larrivee...and that was it. Such a clear warm tone and so easy and comfortable to play. It is a L03 with walnut back and sides and sitka spruce top. At $1300.00 it was more than double my budget. I appreciate the your video and comments. After about a 40 year leave from the guitar I pulled out an old Yamaha classical and began getting my hands and fingers back into shape. While perusing steel string acoustic guitars I impulsively purchased a PRS SE with sitka spruce top and laminated ziricote sides/back. It is really a beautiful and wonderful sounding guitar, and I could easily resell for more than I paid, but GAS has already set in and I can't seem to stop 'perusing' guitars or watching fingerstyle guitarist videos. Being at a high risk for COVID complications, I will also purchase a guitar without the opportunity to see or play it and I have about decided that a Larrivee will be my next guitar purchase. Since the used 03 series seem to sell for about half the 'new' price and likely would never depreciate any further, they would essentially provide a very low risk opportunity to try one out. I'm leaning toward the L or OM size with a cutaway and unsure about the mahogany / rosewood decision. The 12 fret Tommy Emmanuel model certainly would be my first choice, but about $1000 more than I think I can justify at this point. You provide a great rationale for choosing Larrivee. Anyone who would like to hear the acoustic capabilities can listen to Stephen Wake. (I ended up purchasing his complete discography along with his commentary and tabs.) Thanks Gray Picker!

Thanks for your comments. I have never played a guitar with ziricote, but understand it's close to rosewood in tone. That might steer you toward a mahogany 03 to have a bit different tone option to your PRS. Plus Jean Larrivee's "magic" with mahogany is pretty impressive. My other steel string is a 1972 Martin D35S (with rosewood B&S), which steered me to a Larrivee in mahogany. Well satisfied with having the choice of which guitar to pick up and never regretted the decision to go "hog" with my Larrviee.

Thanks for watching, good luck on finding the Larrivee that "has your name on it." Would love to know which one you find.

21 years ago, I got a Canadian friend to buy and bring over to London a Larrivee L-09. I have tried hundreds of Taylors, Martins and Gibsons since then, and not one guitar has ever matched the Larrivee (I do fingerstyle, strumming etc). You can see the Larrivee in action in a few of the videos on my channel. 20 years on I'm itching for a new instrument as a companion and I'm looking at a Lowden O25 :)

Thanks for the comment. I just visited your channel. You are an exceptional musician, and I loved hearing your music. Especially loved "Red House Painters" and the open tuning on your Larrivee, you bring out the instrument tone so well. Looking forward to hearing you play a Lowden too...
