Larry Christiansen's Attacking Chess Crushes Artur Yusupov!
When the 1995 Intel Grand Prix came to New York, American Grandmasters Larry Christiansen and Nick DeFirmian took part, determined to show they could compete with the world's best.
Round 1 paired Christiansen against former world #3, Artur Yusupov and he secured a draw with the White pieces. We join them in the second game with Larry Christiansen under some pressure. His earlier pawn sacrifice hasn't brought him much activity and the Russian now has a passed a-pawn.
If Black sits back then White will be able to gradually increase the pressure. But Larry Christiansen isn't known for sitting back!
He begins with a 2-move Knight maneuver, bringing this piece from d7-f8-g6, a more active square from where it protects the backward e5 pawn and also threatens to jump into f4. Artur Yusupov eliminates this idea with g2-g3. Christiansen nudges his Queen from e8 to d7, clearing way for his a8 Rook to switch to the Queenside which it does on the following move.
With pressure on f2, Yusupov has to put his aggressive attentions on hold and drop his Queen back. Now comes 26...Bc8! and Larry's last piece is joining the Kingside attack, ready to jump to h3 with tempo. Still no problems for White, Yusupov reorganizes his pieces, keeping everything protected. But 28...Qh3 is annoying. Black threatens 29...Qe3+, forcing Queens off and kicking away the Knight defending f3. This would give Black material equality and some nasty back-rank threats.
White decides to switch from defense to attack, bringing his Bishop to c4, letting the extra a-pawn go but denying Black's King the g8 escape square. A couple of moves later and White is threatening mate in 1; Black is pushed onto the defensive.
When Yusupov pushes f5, kicking the g6 Knight, it looks all over for Larry Christiansen. His adventurous Bishop on h3 is trapped and can be won with Ng1 on the next move. With few options left, Larry sacrifices the Bishop for 2 pawns, making his own connected central pawns a real danger.
Incredibly, on the next move, Yusupov blunders and gives back an entire piece! Not wanting to go into an endgame 2 pawns down, White must try and conjure up an attack of his own. However, his pieces are tied up, allowing Larry Christiansen a spectacular winning combination. A fantastic win by the American favorite.
Next we see Vassily Ivanchuk against Icelandic GM Johann Hjartarson. Ivanchuk, the strong favorite, manages to squander a winning attack and soon his opponent is back into the game and finds a great move (Qh8!) to really start increasing the pressure. With the clock ticking down, Ivanchuk has to find critical move after critical move. See how it plays out in the video!
