On the note of "Why can't the gods do things instead of relying on mortals?", my favorite answer is literally just "If the good gods start doing that, the bad gods will, too, and soon they'll be fighting each other directly and it'll destroy the entire world." Maybe with the addendum of "We went through like twenty worlds before we figured that out."
@patrickbuckley7259

The gods in Guild Wars figured that out after subduing one rogue god turned an entire sea into a massive desert... & the region north east of that into caustic wastes. It was 5 on 1, they had the upper hand & it still did that much damage. They still wared with evil gods in the spirit world though, they just insisted on letting the mortals settle things in the mortal world.

the canon forgotten realms lore version is that the gods power is an extension of mortal action and belief so the actions of those they guide IS their action also sending an avatar is risky and there is this whole overarching theme of the gods exploiting mortals for example my mortal fiend warlock almost trapped the avatar of tiamat into a planar binding spell if he had succeeded that would have drastically reduced tiamat's power and given his place in the infernal soul economy that likely would have led to him taking that piece of her essence and divinity for himself permanently kinda like what asmodeus [pre divinity] did to azuth
