Much respect for this wrestling family. I met grandson Curtis Axel (Joe) at Omni Fitness center in Cleveland a few years ago and he was a very respectful young man. Talked about Curt and Scott Hall in the AWA Days and he was happy to talk about it!

Great interview, talking about how quick his match with Roddy was, and the Road Warriors couldn't beat him and couldn't catch Curt - still in kayfabe mode I guess!!! These are all great interviews Devon - so much better having video compared to an audio only. Keep it up to keep memories of all these past greats!

That happens a lot in wrestling unfortunately. Stu Hart and Fritz Von Erich outlived some of their sons. In Fritz’s case, he outlived all of that except Kevin. That should never be the case with people. No parent should have to bury their own kid.

That's awesome-- he and Kurt were with Ventura when he found out he won the Governor election-- Minnasotans- I'd always heard he and Verne -were not chum chummy-- & I'd seen the AWA- documentary where Greg Gagne talks about how indeed they had discussed a buyout- 15 million bucks for the AWA in what 1983 !! That's what an ego does to you folks-- & in the end Verne even had to sell lake minnitonka - hind sight is 20/20--

From a personality aspect, he seems so serious and conservstive where as Curt was a prankster. Everyone knows that Curt and Shawn Michaels are arguably the two best wrestlers. Very sad that his son only made it to 44. I'm sure he holds his emotions back. It must kill him. Luckily Larry has 25 ? Grandkids... and Curtis Axel to divert his attention. When i think of guys like Hennig and Rude, its very sad. Wrestling is a demanding sport and guys do things that they shouldn't. Nobody is perfect; no pun intended. To lose a son who had such life to him....thats a killer. The Axe handles it with class

I remember a WCW Nitro show (I believe that's what it was) and I wanna say it was in Minnesota, because Curt had a match with whoever, BUT, Larry The Ax was there and I think Heenan pointed it out prior to Curt's match...Anyway, Curt got whoever he was wrestling on the floor and got him by his dad, and The Ax just gives a couple good punches in and looks up at the camera basically doing what a wrestler -sorry, HEEL-would do after whaling on someone really good with punches, by gloating to the cameraman for everyone to see, and the audience was going nuts over it, whooping it up, slapping him on the back, Curt raises his dad's arm and gives him a hug....awww man, I'm telling you, it was definitely one of those father/son moments, you could easily tell! He was so proud of Curt, and you KNEW Curt felt the same pride as well❗❗

I wish I could find the Roadies' promo after that match where they busted Curt's head, while it was stuck in the ropes. Got to see it one time and Hawk was like, "Why is Larry Hennig so mad about this? You'd think we busted him up." It wasn't exactly that but it was a good promo, for what I remember.

“So What’s Larry Hennig so hot about? Just because we beat the living hell out of his son. Just because he was gushing blood everywhere to be seen. What are you so hot about? Well you just keep hot. Because your gonna need that temper. For us in New York…..The Meadowlands. You gonna need every advantage you can get, but it still won’t make any difference. The people in New York know it too. Aint nobody ever IN THE STINKING WORLD gonna beat us tell him animal…..” After they retained the AWA World Tag Team Title Vs the Hennigs. Animals says “ Those two are worse then Verne and Greg Gagne they’re never getting another shot at us. Paul Ellering say “ Winning is not everything it’s the only thing Hawk then grabs the mike and says. “ We still got the belts. You don’t like it? WE DON’T CARE!” I swear it’s all from memory haven’t seen it in YEARS! but I’ll never forget it…..peace. :)
