You should check out Gavin Harrison if you want to know what actual musical drumming is. Not that Lars doesn't have his place in the Metal hall of gods, because he does, but he is cocky, arrogant and actually has a hard time Keeping straight time. Most of the album stuff from years prior, he can't even play. In contrast, There is a video of Neil Peart wherein he is playing Subdivisions, but the video is from a 2015 show, and the audio is the studio audio from '82 that was on the record ( kzitem.info/news/bejne/zWmKk22tfIiCg6w ). They perfectly line up and he didn't miss a single fucking note. THAT is consistency. Lars doesn't even play Metallica consistently...

Everyone here giving Lars shit for his drumming but it needs to be pointed out that he's not out of time here, there's just a slight delay between what's coming out of the speakers that's been processed and the actual live sound of the drums that the camera is picking up. I have first hand experience with this. I seen Metallica at Slane Castle in the pit and the sound was great but as soon as they came out for the encore on the walkway where they were within spitting distance of me I could hear both the actual live drums right in front of me as well as coming out through the P.A. and there was a slight delay. Not to mention I have a background in sound engineering and a small delay is to be expected, especially if what you're hearing coming out of the PA has to account for travel around a stadium (depending on where you are in relation to any particular line arrays or what have you.) That's why it sounds so out of time from the guitars here. The phone camera is only picking up the live drums in front of him but the guitars are being heard after going through the desk and out through the P.A. Not to mention also having a lot of reverb rom the stadium on top of them. I'm not here defending Lars, but it's important to note from a technical standpoint why this sounds "out of time."

When you record drum so close with your I Phone and the music from the PA in the background. Do you have the impression that the drum is not syncronized? This is called sound delay. Mario Duplantier - Lars is a genius...(his) drumming is so special, particularly the way he writes those patterns. Even now I think he’s the best showman drummer in the world Mike Portnoy - Lars' drumming was groundbreaking...I can’t state how important he is to drumming and the metal world in general George Kollias - I have a GREAT respect for Lars, i think he and Metallica changed Metal and this is why Lars has made pretty much everyone from my generation to pick up the sticks Tomas Haake - Lars was such an integral part of what made Metallica. They were a completely new animal. It was actually quite technical for the time, if you listen to Kill ‘Em All or Ride The Lightning the work he does on that is very innovative. So you have to give him his props These are quotes from just some of the drummers considered elite in terms of technical ability who have praised/appreciated Lars' playing and ability. Does any of it contradict the fact that Lars can be lazy or keep poor timing at times? Heck no. But if you're only focusing on that aspect, you're missing the forest for the trees. Remember, Music is first and foremost, Art. Not a science, not an athletic competition, Art.

Cool video! That's his raw drum set before going through the PA (they use a shit ton of processing on his drums when you hear their produced live videos) and you are hearing the reverberation of James voice and the guitars, so that's what is possibly making the timing seem out. I don't even think they use real amplification on stage anymore, I believe it's all through the PA and in ear monitoring.
