Why are we here? But more importantly...what are we here for? What are we doing here? What is the meaning of our life?
Suddenly, one day we are born, we grow up and we die. And that's it? And in between what?
We learn, we work, we love, we laugh, we cry, we doubt, we make mistakes... but? why? what for?
In the end we will all be a memory in someone's mind...a photo, a video, an anecdote...hundreds, thousands, millions of people have been here before...and for what purpose? To allow more people to be here? But for what? For what purpose?
Our function is to make sure that someone else stays after we leave, for WHAT, to leave others and then others and then others and so on and so on and so on and so on and so on until when? We have been doing that for thousands of years and nothing changes and nothing we know.
We evolve, we get better or worse, depending on how you look at it, we live longer, more comfortable or the opposite?
A hundred years ago, only a hundred years ago, a letter took weeks or even months to arrive from one city to another, today in a second you say Hello to someone from Japan... Is that? evolving? getting closer? To relate to each other? If so, why do we destroy ourselves so easily?
I believe that life has no purpose in itself because the reason why we are here is by chance, and by definition something that happens by chance is not premeditated, so it has no purpose or objective in itself.
And that's it?
That's what life is? A combination of circumstances that cannot be foreseen or avoided without any meaning? without any purpose?
I believe that this is precisely the key.
The perpetuation of the species, some say, to fulfill oneself, to transcend beyond the facts, others say, to evolve, to seek wisdom and knowledge, to make a better world, to reach union with God, to achieve purity of soul, there are people who defend that the very meaning of life lies in trying to find it and there are people who say that life has no meaning because the world is a horrible, aggressive and destructive place?
The point is that we are all trying to call it something.
I believe that the meaning of life is something that we have invented because as humans with abstract reasoning we need to understand, to assimilate... to find a meaning or purpose to justify our existence.
I call it that. You call it what you want, but what will not change is that what really matters is the path, not where we go.
Whatever the purpose, the goal of our lives, the meaning of life is that the meaning of life does not matter. What matters is to grow, to improve, to be generous, to try to find what we know how to do and exploit it to the maximum, to love, to think, to have fun, to be critical, sincere, coherent, proactive and always live according to our possibilities and faithful to our criteria.
All this is what my parents have taught me.
I think that's a very good start.
What about you?
He who does not live to serve; is not good for life!

Dear Lasallians:
Since that famous subtitle "Shared Mission" was used to introduce Article 17 in the 1987 Rule, Brothers and Partners have been maturing in their co-responsibility for Mission. General Chapters and International Mission Assemblies have promoted formation programs, mechanisms of Lasallian Association and innovative models of governance as avenues for this maturation. Leadership at all levels of governance and Association for Mission remain priorities for the vitality of the educational mission in the future.
The pandemic has crystallized the inequalities and injustices of the world. The poor and working class have disproportionately borne the brunt of social change and upheaval. Mass migration continues unabated as people seek safety and opportunity.
We are called, because we believe! "We believe that another world is possible, and that education is a fundamental force in building it. Our educational perspective aims to build societies where peace, equity, social justice, citizen participation, the construction of common dreams and respect for freedom and difference are possible. The conviction that a better world is possible moves us, the passion for humanity rallies us, and hope encourages us along the way."
The Spirit has honored us with a special moment in this time and a wonderful opportunity to improve the lives of the vulnerable and neglected. As ministers of the Gospel and of Jesus, let us seize the moment.
