Honestly I wouldn't do talk therapy for trauma Keelin. Most psychologists will tell you this. All it does is regurgitate the story and then holds the high possibility of re-traumatising you. I did talk therapy for a year and my ptsd went from moderate to severe for that very reason. You're just repeating the memory over and over without actually integrating it into your psyche. You should seriously look into EMDR. I've done EMDR for memories that were giving me flashbacks, panic attacks, and social anxiety. Within 1-2 sessions I barely think about the memory anymore. And if I do it's as benign as any other memory. It's honestly saved my life.

@@KeelinMoncrieff I hope you find a good practitioner :). Also Dr Gabor Mate has a great book about ADD and trauma called 'Scattered minds'. Other amazing books on trauma is The Body keeps the score' by Bessel Van Der Kolk. And 'From surviving to thriving' by Pete walker.

@@HerbRoberta Oh my psychologist uses the analogy of parts, perhaps that's where she got the information from. Does it also speak about a director? That regardless of how many parts we have, there should always be a director governing over them. But when people are traumatised this 'director' can be hijacked by the dissociated parts which causes them to feel put of control.

The key to therapy (from a psych/philo student's point of view) is to have a good relationship with the therapist. That's why so many people give up on it, it's definitely trial and error. Also, philosophy is great for a perspective change, keep at it. Xx

mentioning bc i saw ur reading new philosopher!! i really think philosophy being super inaccessible is kind of fucked up....i have a degree in it and i still dont really understand it and its frustrating because theories that could potentially revolutionise people cant be accessed by them bc no one really has the time to decipher what people meant and work out all the jargon and stuff

Not sure if youve heard of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) but i've found it rlly good! it has mindfulness as a key part of it. i did have classic talking therapy before but then it got pretty stagnant and unhelpful , good luck with trying to find a good therapist they are out there oxxoxooxo

Same!! I have ADHD along with a mood disorder and BPD traits and honestly ACT and DBT were much more helpful for me than CBT or straight talking therapy. I was way too self destructive for any other therapies lol. My emotions dictated my thoughts so CBT didn’t help at all - CBT is more suited for people whose thoughts dictate/rule their emotions.

Aw keelin I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with shitty therapists and jumping through hoops to get mental health resources. I hope you can find a trusted therapist who can help you navigate your current struggles and just overall enhance your daily life. I feel like there’s a real epidemic of mental health professionals lacking empathy and the ability to form a trusting relationship with their clients and would much rather just diagnose you and move on. No one should make you feel like a burden.
