Here in the UK, that old well would have to be surveyed, risk assessed & plans drawn up to take into consideration debris entering the water table, the possibility of future collapse, rare newts in the well head & the possibility of anything ever being applied to the surface getting down to the water. Then it would have to be dug out to 10' wide before lining with impervious material & filling with a specified (read expensive) grade of concrete. I LIKE the American way. 😁

You mentioned ivy, I want to let everyone know that has a bad reaction to the poison ivy and the like a cheap remedy to getting rid of poison ivy and the like. After I am working around brush or been hiking, I take a bleach bath on areas that were exposed to the elements. I am extremely highly allergic to all poison ivy’s. I had to get several shots and take meds and endure through some tough times. I looked up a home remedy to get rid of the rash. Bleach kills the oil that were allergic to. I may have to repeat the process at most a total of 3 times. Since this discovery, I don’t have to get shots or take meds in over 10 years! I swear by this. So to those who have a reaction to the ivy’s, give this a try. I use a paper towel or rag and pour bleach onto it and wipe down areas that were exposed to the elements. If you wipe down as soon as you are able to the better. You don’t have to use bleach, but it sure helps!
