Most of the time I place spear fishing on the back burner to kayak fishing. I’ll plan dual trips but will either wuss out from seeing a tiger shark or my kayak being over loaded in rough conditions. This trip I had all of my kayak fishing gear and my spear fishing gear loaded in the kayak. It is significant the difference another 20 lbs of gear makes. My friend from work was supposed to meet me around 10 am on his boat to do some spear fishing. I caught a bunch of bait and put two lines out. Over the next several hours I would get a few hits, but I would only be able to convert on one. As it would happen I would only get wahoo hits in the rough conditions. The swells were around 5 feet and the wind was 15 knots. The first wahoo hit in screaming fashion, ripping off 200ft of line in a matter of seconds. It was way out up on the surface and I backed my drag off to bring the fish in. Wahoo usually burn themselves out on their first runs and this one came in pretty easily after. I got the fish by the tail and set up to get a good photo. When I first started on IG I got a good photo of a yellow fin tuna that kind of put me on the map and I wanted to replicate the shot with a wahoo. I did everything I could but didn’t quite turn enough to have the light perfectly illuminate the fish. I guess Ill just have to catch another one to get the picture I had in mind. The first wahoo that hit for the morning was on for around a minute when I lost tension coming down a swell. Bad luck to some extent but I suspect that it wasn’t hooked all that well. With my last two baits I was running a long bait on wire suspended below a ballon and another short bait with about 80 feet of line out also with wire. At this point I realized my coworker would not be coming anytime soon. I figured I might as well head in as it was nearly 930. I decided to drift for another 30 minutes as the current was taking me the right direction anyway. Not long after another wahoo hit my bait under the ballon but I managed to screw it up. I was under the assumption that wahoo ran hard enough to set the hooks themselves. Maybe it was this trip but I decided that I needed to actually set the hooks on the next wahoo. I fished a little longer but the action was over and I headed in. I didn’t end up jumping in the water without a partner.
