Early Kolkata, why did the Europeans go to India? Our search for Job Charnock's grave in St John's Church yard, we find the Monument commemorating the Black Hole of Calcutta and look at the 18th century graves in south Street Cemetery. Why Charnock chose this location for the East India's Companies Trading base at Fort William on the Hooghly River.
I have used and acknowledged an early map 1758 of Calcutta from www.raremaps.com
I would also like to acknowledge the work done by Kolkata Christian Burial Board who are responsible for South Street Cemetery. Donation or other financial support would be greatly appreciated by contacting Mr Ranajoy Bose christianburialboard@yahoo.co.in meranajoy@rediffmail.com
Also the work of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia, who bring together people with an interest for the European cemeteries, isolated graves and monuments in South Asia. secretary@bacsa.org.uk and www.bacsa.org.uk
