Patience is key! My yard still needs a ton of work. But, I'm now on about week 5 after overseeding with TTTF (3rd mow) and it is really coming in nicely. There are stripes I never had before, and the green is a welcome sight when I arrive home each day. Just going to trust that everything goes out strong and comes back with a vengeance is the spring (not the weeds the grass folks!). I do have a big issue with creeping charlie and wild violet that will be a thorn in my side for another season or two, but being my first full season of lawn care, I'm happy with my baby steps!

Oh if I had only found The Lawn Care Nut 6 months ago, or even a month ago!!! I would have saved my self so much frustration, failure and disastrous mistakes. My most recent disaster occurred about a month ago. I live in Central Florida and for years just didn't have the time to really work on the yard. I mowed it and fertilized it once in a while. I had used Bonus S in the back yard a few years ago and half the yard died, but I just didn't have the time to research what happened. I retired and started focusing on the yard last year. I didn't even know what kind of grass I had, so I started by looking at dozens of pictures and reading lots of descriptions. Why I never thought to go to KZitem is beyond me, but I didn't. So I decided that I had St Augustine in the front yard (it grows nicely under a big tree and has not seeds). I decided the back was a mixture of St Augustine and Bermuda, but more Bermuda because of all the seed pods and it didn't seem to grow as tall as the St Augustine. And I read that Bonus S is for St Augustine so I figured that's not what I had most of in the back based on the kill off a few years ago. This summer I had a lot of weeds and and since I thought I had Bermuda in the back I purchased a weed killer to use on Bermuda grass. Well, more than half the back yard died again. So I purchased some Scotts EZ seed Bermuda. I spread it and watered it and watched it grow. Then I noticed it doesn't look anything like what I thought was Bermuda grass in my yard. I did more research, including on KZitem, and have come to the conclusion that the back yard was actually St Augustine and that what I thought was Bermuda is really crabgrass. How dumb could I be?!? I guess I killed most of the St Augustine and left the crabgrass. I also have lots of Nutsedge which I thought was grass at first. When I looked for pictures of grasses, it kept on showing up on weed sights, so I figured that at and now I'm in the process of of killing that off but leaving lots of bare patches in the yard. I suppose many of you are shaking your head, thinking I'm a lost cause. But for those of you that think I have a chance of saving my yard, please help. I suppose the easiest would be to kill everything off and start all over with sod. But I can't afford that, and since I'm now retired I have a lot more time than money. I'd love to help the St Augustine reestablish itself. Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. BTW, I think the type of St Augustine I have might be 'classic' but I'm not sure. Just going by pictures next to the floratam. It looks like it stands up taller. I don't know if the care would be any different. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and again, thank you for any help.

Hi there Al! I live in Virginia, just inherited a home and the summer months the lawn was pretty thick, I started to notice it wasn't grass at all but more weeds than anything. I have had Trugreen come out and aerate and overseed just last week, and yesterday they came out to fertilize and want me to use them to get the yard in shape. In my previous home I was able to get my grass beautiful just by listening to you. My question, what starter fertilizer should I use? Should i wait before applying more fertilizer? Just trying to tackle this before it gets too cold.

Hi, for starters, your pod cast is brilliant, first of your videos I have watched, great stuff. We have really hot days mixed with cold weather and wind and rain all in the same day, my lawn is a mixture of rye and tall fescue, we are in he middle of spring at the moment and I just over seeded and fertilised with out airating the soils first. Will my seed still germinate? Sorry about the long hard to understand question.

Love the Q&A. I did a sulfentrazone treatment for nutsedge and clover in my backyard, which has mainly tall fescue, zoysia invading from the neighbor, and bermuda. The nutsedge is dead, took a month. The bermuda took the most damage of the grasses, really don't want it in the lawn anyways. Hoping next year i can beat it into submission. Any way to beat the zoysia if i choose fescue, its maybe 600-800 sq ft right now, ~15% of the backyard. Otherwise the zoysia will take over entire backyard. Thanks.

The yard has been like this for over 10 years (before I bought the house) Having two kinds of grass is making me crazy - I'm thinking about trying to get that zoysia to take over the shady part by planting plugs, or maybe even sod since its' < 500 sq feet, but I'm a bit concerned about color match - is there much color difference between older and newer zoysia cultivars?

Thanks for the great content! Would Milorganite work well as a winterizer, or one of the specifically branded “winterizer” products?

Hi, I downloaded your app and oretty excited to start the process. It has me skip to skip 3 and thing it's telling me to do is fertilize. I bought the fertilizer. Wondering if this is what I'm suppose to do prior to seeding or getting rid of weeds?
@Thelawncarenut

if you are in Miami you do not need to seed, just apply pre-emergent and fertilizer and bio stimulants

Are millipedes harmful to st. augustine grass? I found a bunch of red millipedes in my st. augustine.

No they don't hurt anything, just annoying if they get in your house.

In the cool season grass section of the country, how long can we expect the N-P-K in our last fert app to last in the lawn? Does it really last to be useful until next April? Thanks!
@Thelawncarenut
4 жыл бұрын
yes it lasts because the ground is very cold and so is the air so it literally "freezes" and waits for the next season's thaw. This is why it's important to put it down a couple weeks after your final mow, so it is not used up this year.

When are you getting an Pro Vista deal on your website so I can get some through you?
@Thelawncarenut

that probably won't happen but I appreciate the thought! If you are on the west coast, you can get it from Big Earth Supply by the piece or the pallet.

Does it matter what kind of KBG seed I use if I need to over seed in the spring? I'm in a newer home with Scotts seed "Thermo Blue". My lawn looked horrible this fall and I wasn't able to take the time to properly take care of it. I'm planning to aerate and over seed (if needed) in the spring, and was curious on the type of KBG seed I should use if I over seed.
@Thelawncarenut

I don;'t recommend seeding in spring - best to push the lawn hard with fert and thicken up what is existing, then you can seed in fall.

I had just seeded and had beautiful bermuda grass but then army worms came and ate it all. I put BT which got rid of them and now it's coming back. But it's now thin. Do I just keep watering or can I put fertilizer? I live in Hawaii so I'm not sure it'll go dormant.
@Thelawncarenut

it should come back - army worm don't kill bermuda, just stunt it. hit it with fert and keep it watered

@Thelawncarenut

you are coming up close to winter now and may not have time for seed to mature. Best to start hitting hard next spring with fert and thicken up what you have.

@@Thelawncarenut soil temps are still 65 to 70 in NC where I'm at. I figured it would still germinate and I wouldn't get spread since it's 95 percent tttf and 5 percent kbg

I thought too much nitrogen late in the season contributes to snow mold?
@Thelawncarenut

I have not heard that one, high N winterizers have been standard for decades. Either way, snow mold causes no lasting damage so feel free to thrower down!
