The Shoal Bass is the largest stream specialist in the Micropterus genus and a member of the sunfish family Centrarchidae. Shoal Bass are native only to the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River drainage. Shoal Bass were introduced to the Ocmulgee River (below Lake Jackson) in the Altamaha drainage by the Georgia Department of Game and Fish in 1975. Habitat loss resulting from dam construction, land-use changes, and hybridization with illegally introduced/nonnative black bass have greatly reduced the range of the Shoal Bass and continue to threaten the species.
