Theory and piano lessons help. Theory helps a tremendous amount with knowing what sounds good with what you’re currently playing. What to modulate to. How to modulate. And just overall how to use the piano is a tool and not just a toy

Do you (or anyone here) have any advice for a musician beginning to learn piano in earnest? I'm not suuuper convinced teaching myself is the best way to form good habits. :)
@francoisb.6301
6 ай бұрын
Hey there 👋 First things first, the piano: if you're going for a cheap piano at first (which would be understandable; it's quite a budget), make sure to take a digital piano with weighted keys. Appropriate ones typically hit in the €400-700 range, which is already a lot, so you might be tempted to look for second-hand deals. If you do, take your time to be that person and test every single key several times with different stroke force. *Your typical synth keyboard won't cut it.* Developing a feel for the key weight is crucial in attaining good dynamic control, and poor keys will undermine your efforts towards that as a beginner. A full piano keyboard has 88 keys, but going for a smaller keyboard can make for a significant cut in the price. 76 keys are fine too, but IMO you shouldn't be going below 61 keys (that is what VR is playing on in the video). Then, you'll want to get a teacher. Don't be afraid to try out different ones. The first session will always be more talking than playing, or at least I'd expect it to be: you'll be stating your goals, the teacher will probably be doing some expectation management, etc. If things don't go too well with a teacher then make the switch and try a different one. With that said, it's also *somewhat* okay not to understand why your teacher appears to be focusing so much on something that seems of anecdotal relevance to you. Technique can be counter-intuitive and, frustratingly so, you don't always get to understand certain aspects of playing until it "clicks" and you just start feeling it, whereas you simply didn't beforehand. It's easier for those clicks to happen if your teacher continuously clears some gestural subtleties as you go. Another important point: take your time. Don't rush it, make it easy on yourself, etc. Practice takes times, but results *will* show up. If you can, practice often: it's much easier to bake stuff into muscle memory if you practice half an hour everyday rather than 2 hours twice a week, and you'll see progress at a faster rate. You mentioned you were a musician already though so perhaps you already knew all that :) Best of luck with your endeavour!
