I just adore your shade garden and I got a lot of inspiration watching your video. Question, what about snails because they love hosta. We have plenty here in Belgium. Epimedium is definitely on my wish list 🤩, when is the best time in the year to buy (find) them?
@GuidingGreenThumbs
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Usually spring is the best time to find the Epimedium because that’s when they flower so most nurseries will have them in stock. As far as snails go, we have them as well but not terrible. Wet years are obviously worse but with our drought last year for much of the summer, we had very little damage. I don’t have a great remedy for snails, except I will say that putting beer in cups buried at ground level does lure and trap them. You only need a yogurt size container, nothing too deep or the frogs may get trapped. I’m not sure how large of a space you have but its a good solution for a smaller garden if they’re really destroying things. Sluggo is a bait and kill option for slugs and snails however I hate to suggest anything that is chemical based. They ingest it and it kills them. They claim it doesn’t harm wildlife or pets but I always try to stay away from chemical baits.

I love your garden. Beautiful combinations. I’ve been growing Hakonachloa for about 4 years but they are growing so slowly. I have probably 10-12 clumps growing in a couple of locations & want them to grow together so they make a large clump like yours. How old are yours? Fertilizer? Special treatment? Have subscribed to your channel & look forward to watching more of yiir videos
@GuidingGreenThumbs
3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct, they are very slow to establish BUT I can tell you that I am able to slice off clumps of it in the spring every year to keep them neat. I do fertilize the entire garden with Espoma Plant Tone granular early in the Spring, I mulch with an organic fine composted mulch and then twice a season I use Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed Blend liquid fertilizer. It comes in a concentrate that you dilute in water when you're ready to use it. Does wonders!!

Great Video! Beautiful shade garden. You mention the Heucheras that are more reliable (coming back reliably year after year). I've struggled with this myself. Do you have any suggestions for us??
@GuidingGreenThumbs
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So in my zone (5b) we have really harsh winters... the reliable ones have been mostly the deep purple ones, such as purple palace, plum pudding and then the silvery ones like cinnabar silver and circus. The lime and lighter colored ones have a rough go of it here. Citronelle Ive tried many times and while it makes it through the winter, it never fills out and gets smaller every year. I know they also need to be dug and reset deeper every 3 years... they produce new growth farther and farther away from the crown every year and then the frost heaves them out and they suffer. Resetting them lower into the ground def helps with their vitality.

I planted two Jack Frost last Spring and both died by fall. They were close to the sprinkler so I'm not sure if it was a "too much water" issue or not enough light issue. My shade garden is very shady in parts since the trees above are about 19 years old or better. I'd love to get a clump of Brunnera going but it's a plant I don't have any experience with. I love my all gold also and love to pet them too lol. Your garden is beautiful, just subcribed!
@GuidingGreenThumbs
3 жыл бұрын
They definitely don't like too much "wet" or too much sun. Too much water can give them crown rot... They do like a rich, amended soil but not consistently wet.They can be finicky to get established but are drought tolerant when they are. (I have lost a few of them myself!) I would recommend watering from the ground level also- not over the leaves... If you buy new ones, don't plant in the heat... they hate their roots roughed up especially in the heat of summer. I would plant new ones in the early spring and give them the whole season to establish. Don't over water in the spring while temps are cool... just keep an eye on the leaves for wilting in the heat, then water (or if you know the ground is dry from lack of rain.) Hope this helps!
@planttasticcookinggardenin1561

@@GuidingGreenThumbs Thank you so much! This has been very helpful and I'll try again early next Spring in a different location away from the grass sprinkler head. After what you just said, I'm almost positive it was crown rot.

I am sooo happy you pointed out your Hydrangeas hardly bloom in NY due to the late frosts. Same thing happens to mine here in Illinois by Chicago. I've had my hydrangeas for 7 years. Every year no blooms but because of the warmer temperatures this spring my 5 older varieties have blooms. What a lovely shade garden you have! I really enjoyed the tour, the names and variety of plants & applaud you for creating one irrespective of the deer! I have been very frustrated w the deer, so this has been motivating! I am curious to know - how close do you space plants to get this lush look? Also would love to see maybe a panorama or aerial shot of your property since you have multiple beds. Thanks again, you got yourself a new subscriber!!
@GuidingGreenThumbs
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the questions! So yes, deer are very frustrating! Not a foolproof garden by any means but Im determined to make it work. When I first planted this garden, it was actually two separate gardens... and I planted small (1 gallon pot) sized plants or starts. I planted them quite close. As the years went by, they started growing next into one another and I had to remove some and keep maintaining the clump size on other things... I didn't pay attention to the mature size when I first planted but it woud'nt have hurt... I kept alot of the bigger hostas and plants where they were and did a lot of rearranging and moving around of the smaller and slower growing plants before it really settled in nicely. Now it's just maintenance dividing and planting of new things when I cant resist... :-) I dont have a way to do an aerial shot but maybe the panoramic would work! I have done some of those on my Facebook page Guiding Green Thumbs.

Mature hostas are a sight to behold... its the patience waiting that is the hard part! They will be huge in no time! ;-)

I wrote down some names of plants to buy from this, thank you for showing us. The dogs barking made it a little hard to hear you there at the end, but otherwise ok for me personally on sound.

Your Hostas are lovely. I have some of the same varieties, but mine are constantly nibbled on by slugs & snails. Don’t you have that problem?
