I never had an engagement ring because my husband and I were worried about the ethics of diamonds and metals. We looked into ethical diamonds and they were either really pricey or in America and we were worried about the air miles. We got married only 7 months after husband "proposed" (I use the word in the loosest possible way) so we decided just to have our wedding rings. We got them from a company called Eco-rings in Bath, made of wood (a bit of old whiskey barrel) and repurposed white gold. They were made just for us and the company are amazing! 😊 Both of us would totally recommend them! 😊

Thats so cool Katie! I'd love to see your rings! I also don't have an engagement ring! Plus my husband and me also got wedding rings made just for us, they are made of gold found in a small river in Gerrmany as a gravel byproduct! I bet there are more brilliant jewelry companies or even just 'fair' goldsmiths out there!

Totally agree about the engagement rings comment! I purposely told the boy that I didn't want one because of the ethics behind the industry. He was more than supportive, so he put whatever ring money he would have spent towards a trip for us. That's when I knew it was love. Haha. 😄 So glad to hear you're hitting your stride! I feel like the last year has been really good for solidifying the basics for me, but now I want to kick it up a notch into making more things myself/growing more at home than I already do/investing more in businesses that I agree with and want to see flourish. Must be the autumnal influence--I always feel like September is the new year rather than January. 😄

You can buy bicarbonate of soda in a paper box at Wilco 500g for £1.50. They also sell citric acid in paper box for £1.50 which I use for getting rid of the limescale from a kettle.

About wine, some companies (at least French ones) do not put an organic label on their bottle, because some custumers think that organic wine will taste differently. So keep that in mind when you purchase your wine !

they don't sell dishwasher powder in a box in the UK? In the US they do. They also sell laundry powder in boxes. Unfortunately they do give you a plastic scoop but that's the only non-zero waste thing. Some places will recycle the scoop.

I loved this video! Thank you for both book recommendations. Actually, I have a huge essay to write for my course in school, it's called the International Baccalaureate diploma program, and its a 4000 word essay on a topic that means a lot to you or something you are interested in researching. I have recently become obsessed with sustainability and veganism! After watching the video and stressing over the essay that's due before I graduate, I wanted to use these two books as research material and I want to focus my essay on this topic. Thank you so much for your channel and your personality! It inspires me to choose a more sustainable lifestyle. (I have ordered The Story of Stuff on Amazon second hand and I have checked out The Third Plate from my local library, LOL :)

Just a curiosity about engagement rings. I'm from Brazil, here we don't buy a diamond ring, just a wedding band, and use in the right hand when we're engaged, change hands when we get married. Usually in gold, but mine and my husband's are in surgical steel, since I'm allergic to some metals that are mixed in gold. Just seems like a more sustainable and cheaper solution to the engagement thing.

Hi Kate! Wow!! I definitely want to read that book (2nd)! Have you ever used shampoo bars? I like the idea but I'm afraid it won't clean and volumize my hair. Because of food allergies and sensitivities, I don't think zero waste is completely possible for me. But I've eliminated a lot of waste and am always loving products with less plastic 😄
@SkylaSternenlocke

Girl With Grit what kind of shampoo are you using atm? Shampoo bars usually have the same sulfates as milder bottled shampoos or baby shampoos in them. And it should be enough cleaning power. If you currently use harsher shampoos maybe even with silicones it might be a while until your scalp adapts but it will be better for your health, hair and the environment. I use natural soap bars btw. but it's harder to find the right soap for yourself than a shampoo bar.

I understand there are many reasons to seek organic food sources. However, I think the wine one is at least a worthy debate. For instance this particular organic winemaker refused to used pesticides on his crops. The French authorities fined him. Grapes attract a lot of pests and diseases. I also grew up with vines. We had to spray them a few times a year just to take the edge of the risk of loosing the entire production. Growing grapes in large quantities is a hard process, they tend to be frail without human intervention. There are at least a dozen steps to be done before harvesting. Wine making itself is a risk taken every year by the growers. The French authorities are weary of allowing grapes diseases to be spread and destroy vast amounts of grapes. And who can blame them. Having the production of something so important as wine messed with by just one person not following the spraying protocol can have huge consequences. The parallel with vaccine refusals comes to mind. And the argument is not just about the time and money lost. It can also be about the large area of land that could have produced food and it did not. Farmable land is a limited resource. Shouldn't we be mindful about the way we're using it in order to feed more rather than fewer people. If the price for that is using some pesticide, isn't that worth paying. Don't we have the moral responsibility, in the face of all the starving people across the globe to make the most out of our lands? www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/23/french-organic-winemaker-prison-pesticide

To preach environmentalism but to ignore the biggest buzz of environmentalism aka the animal agriculture business. Give conspiracy a watch it's the best one for enviroment if you're only going to watch 1. Everyone says you can't be an environmentalist if you're not vegan. Not to be the vegan buzz kill but that wool duvet has so much torture & eco strain surrounding it.
