What if I told you that Pompeii was not only destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, but also by an earthquake that occurred 17 years earlier? In this video, I will show you how this earthquake affected the city and its inhabitants, and how it led to the discovery of a stunning mosaic floor that was recently uncovered by archaeologists.
The mosaic floor was part of a luxurious domus, a type of house that was common among the upper class of Roman society. The domus was located off the main street of Pompeii, and had exceptional mosaics and spacious rooms. The earthquake of AD 62 damaged the domus and caused it to be abandoned and demolished. The mosaic floor was buried under the floor level of a corridor behind a swimming pool that was part of the Stabian Baths, one of the largest public baths in Pompeii.
