Sports betting, transfers, NIL and fantasy have destroyed college sports. I hope everyone is happy

All of those except sports betting. People have been betting on the sports forever. Transfers and paying players (disguised as NIL) has wrecked it.

I don’t think anyone is happy. I’m sure even the coaches at those schools like Georgia or A&M would rather go back to the BCS era in a heartbeat because even they get burned by portal departures as often as they gain from it. And having to navigate the NIL (& rates of top players continue to sky rocket) in addition to all the other coaching obligations, I don’t think any coaches are happy with the way it is now. So fans, coaches and (most likely) boosters are getting fed up with it. But people still watch the games, buy tickets for the game… so why would anything change?

@@perfectsense3240 Sports betting has really changed, it's not like past sports betting. Realize a college player can whip out their phone before a game, put down $5000 on themselves making less than 10 points and tank the game. Players literally can bet on themselves. You don't even need an entire team to cheat, one player can cheat on his own and clean up.

Transfers were always about 2nd thru 4th stringers finding success at other programs. Sit out a year while playing at a JUCO, then come back to your new school and hopefully get the chance to be starter. Now with the portal, you have STARTERS transferring out. And this new system doesn’t stop the hoarding of 4/5 star recruits because the school with the most money can still do it. As a matter of fact high school recruits seemed to be devalued because they can transfer out as soon as they get there.

The portal is helping programs too, it's not just players. Now coaches, like Jonathan Smith, can tell players to screw off and hit the portal. And MSU has NIL money, they can go and poach players as well. So the portal/NIL is helping programs with cash. And any loyalty to players is out the window. That will hurt players that aren't elite. Their scholarship will be pulled after a season. Like Izzo said, these players are now on a 1-year contract. No more loyalty either way.

I loved watching MSU under Dantonio, but the portal absolutely killed my enthusiasm for college football. I think the big beneficiary of the chaos caused by NIL + portal is the NFL. The NFL has never had a problem with viewership, but I think it will increase when college football fans defect due to a lack of interest.

The problem is that NIL is tailored towards endorsements, but is used as a recruiting tool. The current NIL rules prohibit strict pay-for-play, so they can't prevent him from leaving after receiving payment or get money back, they can only give him money as a personal endorsement hoping that he stays. It's the ultimate gambit.

In the end, maybe it’s just donors’ money. And some might say it’s a peanut compared to the wealth those donors have. But I’m sure those amounts are not negligible for many donors, those millionaires/billionaires are actually quite “petty” about their money; after all, those people wouldn’t be where they are at if they don’t understand the importance of money. And most importantly, it’s the gesture & psychology behind it; if you pay a player and the player comes back asking for more shortly after, that would piss off anyone’s ego (especially of those rich donors). And now they know that paying a player doesn’t even guarantee he will be there for next year? At that point, why would they spent the money knowing it’s likely wasted & they will be pissed off?
@ldwr011

It is largely money from wealthy donors, however, these universities are indeed shameless enough to pass on a portion of this burden onto the fans. They do this by reducing the amount of general seating at events in favor for more luxury seating and continuously raising the bar for donation incentives. They do not care about the average fan anymore, it has turned into a financial arms race.

Yeah personally I haven’t been to game events in years, but it seems that the live event experiences have taken a hit too. I also agree that they don’t care about average fans anymore. When we were all in the BCS era, people complained about different things, but man, do I miss the BCS era. Transfers used to be a major decision. No NIL. Players rarely skip bowls and bowl games actually meant something. These are all gone.
