Those 3 long screws you struggled to get out are most likely to keep the locking nuts in; the 3 nuts you put the T-handle in to tighten/loosen the jaws or collet. They are essentially keyed gears that you turn. Keep on keeping on!

Hey Alec, auto mechanic from the great white North of Canada here. With all the road salt on our icy roads the impact driver is one of my best friends. Quick tip how to use it. Just give it one really good wack and then try to turn it by hand with a regular screwdriver. The impact driver moves ever so slightly and then returns to the starting position because of the spring action in it. The hammer blow just provides downward and rotational force to break the rust free not to actually turn the screw. I just give it one good wack with just enough force your almost unconfortable with how hard you hit it then check if it turns by hand. You will be surprised at how well it works getting screws loose even if it doesn't look like it turned at all.

the impact screwdriver works a lot better if you put a little torque in the direction you want to go like youre using it like a screw driver. doesnt need much youre really just taking the slop out and setting the direction you want it to go. just setting it inand hitting it could turn in or out or just flop one way or the other without putting any torque into the fastener

Hey Alec- here locally these tools, are known as "Impact Drivers" - the force of the impact maintains the bit within the damaged slot while the bit itself then drives the stubborn screw / bolt out against the thread. The alternative of course would be a screw extractor but you would then need to have first drilled / bored a suitably sized hole to a suitable depth and then employe a suitably sized screw extractor. Many refer to these as EZY-Outs / aka Easy Outs and this terminology is also found in marketing. If the offending screw / bolt is situated somewhere robust enough to take the pounding of the Impact Driver all well and good - it the situation / location is more delicate then screw extractors are the better choice.

A couple suggestions, if you're having problems removing broken bolts or screw. You can heat them up until they are slightly red, and try and remove them immediately, pour cold water on them, or let it cool down over night. There is many tricks to that, however you could have taken your TIG welder and stacked beads on the head on the screws or bolt, and until it was high enough to weld a washer on or nut.

An impact screwdriver works the best when you use a heavier hammer and give it slower, more continuous blows instead of short taps. In some cases it also helps to hold the driver with something like a pipe wrench so that not only is your hand away from danger, but also you have a long 'handle' to help hold the torque. An impact screwdriver is a glorious tool either way, and they even come in the smaller 1/4" drive for those smaller tips, handy for more precise stuff like getting small bolts out of aluminium where a bigger driver/hammer would just goof up the threads.

The ring that the six slot screws go in is the spring plate that pushes back on the collet so it doesn't get stuck in the chuck. The three threaded pins you took out are for the 3/8" square drive gears that turn the collet threads. I really hope you do not try to mount and spin that chuck without replacing those pins as those gears will come out at quite a high velocity.

The way you tempered that bit made me think it might chip...Although it makes seeing your colors easier, standing the bit up on your heating block like that means the heat reaches the tip last. If you look closely in the video, you can see that the tip is really straw/purple while the base is solidly blue. Seeing as the tip is the thinnest and takes the force, you'd really like to take it all the way to blue. You could use a differently shaped block that surrounds pieces more, like a 3-sided hollow half-cube shape to even out the heat and leave a viewing window that could accommodate variously sized/shaped parts. Also surprised you don't have a softer brass/bronze/nylon hammer on hand for disassembly and 'adjustments'. Love the work, though; keep it coming!

When you have screws like that that haven't been removed in a long time (or ever), make yourself a small batch of 50/50 acetone and automatic transmission fluid (ATF). This is an extremely effective penetrating oil and works wonders with stuck screws. It is very cheap as well. Just drip a little onto the screw and let it soak for a few minutes (or hours if it's really nasty/rusty).
@xXQuick123Xx

I believe those screw drivers are called impact screwdrivers. They allow you to turn hammering force into linear motion that is very high torque so all you have to worry about is the hammering.

Hey Alec to properly use an impact driver you have to preload the tool by turning it in the direction that you want to rotate. With it in counter clockwise ( anti clockwise ) if you twist the tool counterclockwise you preload the tool and it also takes up an gear lash in a well used one. Try this as it makes the impact driver very effective!

Heating the whole thing up would be one option for a stuck screw, but that could ruin any heat treatment the piece had. A penetrating oil, like Liquid Wrench, might help too. Honestly though, drilling out is generally what you should plan to have to do if a fastener won't come out. And when you get it out, shout,"EXCALIBUR!"

check to see how gunsmith screw drivers are ground with a hollow ground edge that bites into the bottom of the screw groove and prevents slipping out and increases the force imparted to the screw. Secondly, don't harden the tip so much,if it distorts under pressure, instead of breaking it can be reformed and reused again. Use copper based antis-seize compound on the screws when reassembled so that in the future they will not require a nuclear powered screwdriver to remove them!

So you could use all the 'things' (don't know how to call the pieces you fit into the screwdriver) on the larger screwdiver.... Use it as an adapter to fit the 6 (?) mm pieces into the 8 mm pieces
