What a thing of beauty! Love the spiral grooves. Thanks for posting. Appreciate your dad every day that he's with you. You'll never regret crafting this for him.

Very nice project David! I do agree with you about turning being form the "head and the heart". To give something of yourself is the greatest gift you can give.. I am a woodworker/turner and, I think I might enjoy turning as much as you :) Good luck, Dan Campbell

Lovely finished piece David. I was thinking of buying dowel and making a good looking cane head but I might have to think again. Good to be liked in the USA where many of my customers come from; I find Americans to be the most appreciative of artisan work.

Have just started turning. Made a couple of gavels, a couple of chess pieces and four simple candlesticks. The walking cane is really beautiful. May try when I get more confident. Thanks for sharing your project on videos.

Very gr8 video on how to make a cane. (both vids). I am getting ready to turn one for a neighbor of mine that is over 80. He brought me over a 3x3 piece of Poplar that I am gonna split in half and add a piece of Walnut to the middle, very similar to what you've done. I'd like to see a few better pics of your center support, and how it mounts, etc. This will be my 1st attempt at making a cane. Thnx in advance. Roger

I'm a woodturner too. Looking at the comments and how unkind some people are. I agree with your in-video comment on "plastic" from China. Doesn't mean we're hateful. We appreciate the artisans of the good old US of A (not the big conglomerates either). And I would appreciate getting some of the good stuff from China made by THEIR artisans/woodcrafters instead of big manufacturers that don't know quality.

Canes do indeed make good weapons. Some trivia: Sam Houston beat Ohio congressman William Stanberry with a cane after Stanberry accused Houston of fraudulent dealings with Native Americans. At his trial before Congress, Houston was defended by Francis Scott Key, but his claim of self defense was unavailing. He was found guilty, reprimanded, and ordered to pay $500 damages to Stanberry. Instead, he went to Texas. Great video.

Hmm... I wonder... If you went over the same area with the spiral wheel, but in different directions (different angles), would it make a checkered pattern? That'd be something to see, and it'd make a real secure grip.

Hi, David, great videos, but one thing you left out was the way you joined the handle to the cane! Could you tell me/us more about that? I'm thinking of doing the same thing you did -- build one for my dad.

Sorry I left that part out. I turned the top of the cane to exactly 1" and then bored a 1" hole in the handle with a forstner bit. I then glued them together with Titebond wood glue with the help of a long clamp. Thanks for watching!

Very nice! Did you use any kind of fastener attaching the handle? I've got one I"m working on but haven't decided how best to attach the handle. I'm thinking about a lag screw and glue, to give an extra bit if strength. Good videos, thanks for sharing! Larry
