The handshakes are the same, as are the signs that you do with your hands. Also, the penalties that got taken out in the 90s were the same. Also the marks on the garments are lifted from the ceremonies. Also, the use of the apron is likely taken too.

There is a 450 page book "Method Infinite - Freemasonry and the Mormon Restoration" comparing every parallel between the two. The sheer size of the book tells you how many parallels there are, including similarities between Masonry and the Danites or Relief Society, the "Hosanna shout - handkerchief thing", the Hill Cumorah story, undecipherable scripts, etc.

I would love to step back in time and experience the pre-1990 endowment! I do feel like their removal and removal of Satan’s preacher has lead to a casualness about the temple secrets and a mindset that we aren’t to stand up for what is sacred.

So if I understand this clearly, the message that is taught in the temple about God and the Plan of Salvation is ancient, but the method of teaching can be of more modern origin. The teaching method can even change without the message itself being altered.

I think a lot of beauty can be found in the symbols of the endowment. However, I can’t say that this is any higher and holier than the religious symbolism used outside the Temple. I’m interested to hear more about that. Also, as Elder Renlund recently acknowledged, temple covenants are essentially an extension or furtherance of the baptismal covenant. Without establishing the need, this would make the endowment redundant and diminishes baptism. In addition to the Masonic origins, another controversial matter in the history is alleged pattern of Joseph to create evermore circles within circles and escalating levels of authority to shore up his own position. I believe the failure of Zion’s camp led directly to the need to be “endowed with power from on high.” I hope you can get some qualified historians to give both sides of this. I don’t mind an apologetic explanation, but many come off as very dismissive of legitimate concerns, while they themselves rely on ambiguous possibilities to bolster a dogmatic status quo. If they cannot ever be critical or validate opposing conclusions as being reasonable, then it’s just not an honest pursuit of truth.

I have a genuine question - If you see connections to early Christian temple rituals, why do you not associate yourself with the church that does those same rituals still today? It seems to me that if the LDS church is supposed to be a restoration of early Christian practice, there shouldn't be all these alterations and additions, especially when many of those same early practices are being done today in other churches.
@mormonismwiththemurph

I don't see any other churches doing those rituals today. The connections between gnostic rituals are very similar to our endowment. It depends on your view. We'll be looking into why there's been changes. A faithful view would be that, the endowment was a restoration but there can be adaptations, changes or additions overtime. That it's not unchanging. But the core of the ordinance and endowment remains the same.

The Masons want their rituals back. It's not a coincidence that Joseph made himself a Master Mason shortly before developing the Temple ceremonies. Why were NONE of these rituals described in the Book of Mormon? For that matter, why aren't Temples aren't even mentioned in the BoM once?

If you are sincere it’s easy to find references to temples in the Book of Mormon.. 2Nephi 5:16; Mosiah 1:18; 3Nephi 11:1. Don Bradley has a few interviews on ward radio that are excellent on this topic. With some of your own searching you can sound a little more informed. “7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Mathew 7:7-8

@bn12595 my friend you're missing the big picture. There are entire swathes of text within the BOM that coincide through symbolism, with the ancient Israelite temple practices, including new names, heavenly ascents, 3 rooms or areas that one moves through, grips or grasps, and so on and so on. It blows my mind that anti mormons claim there's never anything temple related in the BOM yet fail to realize Ether chapter 3 is temple vision, Lehi's first vision is temple imagery, Lehi's tree of life is temple liturgy through and through, add onto that King Benjamin's commencement speech being a feast of tabernacle ritual, Jacob's sermon in 2 Nephi 6-9 is straight up Day of Atonement ritual, when Christ visits in 3rd Nephi he's running the people through all 5 covenants in the same order we do them in. You're so stone cold set on the book being fraudulent that you've never even considered maybe there's some complex fucking things in the book. Do me a favor, get Dave's first book, get Margaret Barkers Temple Theology, and for dessert read Don Bradley's 116 lost pages, and then come tell me there's not a single temple theme or symbol found with in the book.

Every covenant in the Temple can be found in the Bible. It always amazes me when I hear people say they are surprised by the covenants that are asked to take. Did they not listen in Sunday School or read Scriptures? The questions asked to be able to enter the Temple are pretty basic, so I suppose anyone who can answer them can go, but it still is strange they were caught off guard. I was caught off guard by the intense cerimonialism.

@@Adam-ww8ei I first went in about 30 years ago. The Covenants haven't changed. Also, giving everything to the Church is to give it to God just like tithing. The early Church during the time of Christ had everything in common, at least for a short time. There is a Bible story in Acts where a couple promised to give everything they had to the Church, but held some of it back. They were killed by the power of God for lying.
