My neighbor's best friend was on the USS Massachusetts from onset to war's end. I also knew this man. His name is painted on the bulkhead with all the other sailors. My neighbor showed me where he came on board in the Leyte Gulf during WWII and where he walked down to see his best friend with a bottle of booze, walking his exact path so many years before. I drove them down to Fall River (along with my neighbor's nephew, also a Navy veteran of VietNam) almost 30 years ago. It was a great trip. My neighbor and his best friend are both long gone now, but that trip really made their day. I know I'll never forget it.

She’s beautiful then as much as she is now. It sad she seems to be forgotten in Fall River

This shipyard produced many cruisers and several of the Essex class aircraft carriers in addition to Big Mamie. Incidentally, Big Mamie wasn't as big as she should have been; to save weight the South Dakota class ships were shortened about 40 feet compared to the preceding North Carolina class; I'm told that weight went into improved armor but to maintain same top speed as Showboat [NC] and the Mighty W [WA] more powerful boilers and turbines were needed due to the reduced waterline length. A longer hull reduces drag, beam and draft being equal.

Oh my goodness that is so interesting. Man I just thank those men and women veterans who were so strong and brave enough to get out there and fight for our country here in the United States of America!
