How beautiful Laura's family is! They stood strong in the midst of suffering. Really the best book I have ever seen. It can not be compared to any other book.❤❤❤

A shame they changed the name of the Laura Ingalls Wilder children's literacy award because they are afraid to let history be history. When I was a child, reading these books, my takeaway about Native Americans was that they were fighting for their homeland, but a Chief had saved the Ingalls family from being massacred. And another kind Native American warned the settlers about the deadly winter coming their way. As a child, I learned true history from these books. Not the whole story, but an accurate depiction of it. Censorship and trying to erase history does a lot of harm. We need to learn from history, not erase it.

It's ridiculous isn't it? When I read those books, I had no ill feelings toward the Native Americans and I don't feel Laura meant to show them in a bad light, either. It's history! Don't cover it up!

We always had a phrase, give the writer his due. Don't judge them by another era's mores. I hate revisionism and the petty motives. She is a wonderful writer and we are richer for her contributions. They cannot take that away.

Her daughter was her editor. No mystery there. She did not co-write the book with her mother. It was her mother's alone. We know this for certain because the Little House books are masterpieces that have become world famous while everything the daughter wrote - and she wrote a lot - has long been forgotten.

@rhett, You 'kind of' wish means you really don't want to, right? It was a VERY tough life being a frontiersman or pioneer! At least most people had land that they could farm but nothing was easy! Having to be wary of hostile Indians doesn't seem like fun either! I wonder what Laura meant by "not the whole truth"? TBH, I'm looking for a cabin in the woods to live in now! I've been 'downsizing' the past 12 years. Each move is closer to a completely rural setting. I'm almost there! In 1973 I went thru an outward bound leadership course, and I was tops in my class, and 2nd best athlete/recruit in the camp! It was as close to 'pioneering' as any modern setting could be! The only modern machinery was a chain saw. Everything else was done using hand tools, like cross-cut saws, axes, shovels, etc. WE had to push-pull a small trailer full of firewood logs up the mountain road to camp. That made a man outta me! Very gruelling course! I never saw pavement for 4 mos! 13 years after that (1986) I went to a DO-NO-HARM VEGAN diet! I have't been sick since! I'm still in decent shape at 70 yrs old.

Rose supposedly lost a TON of her money, and the meager savings of her parents that she unwisely invested in the stock market crash of Oct 1929. Laura's first book came out in 1932, so it's obvious that Rose felt bad, and encouraged her mother to write pioneer stories after Oct 1929, which Rose HEAVILY edited to get it published to make desperately needed money. Rose typed up Laura's hand written notebooks. I don't think Laura even learned how to type. Laura dropped out of school at 16 to teach, and did not finish the weak "High School" in DeSmet. Rose finished High School in Louisiana at Eliza Jane Wilder's, and was a voracious reader her entire life. Laura had very elementary writing skills, while Rose had already been working for years at a newspaper in SF, lots of magazines articles, and books, and edited a lot of stuff.
